1. 8 March: International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is being observed on 8 March. The theme for the day in 2021 is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”. The day is celebrated to help forge a gender-equal world, celebrate women’s achievements and their increasing visibility in every sphere of life. It also highlights the extraordinary roles played by women in almost every walk of life.

2. Vinesh Phogat wins her 2nd gold medal

Vinesh Phogat won her second gold medal in the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series event and reclaimed the top rank in her category in Rome. She defeated Canada’s Diana Mary Helen Weicker 4-0 in the 53kg title clash. She is the only Indian woman wrestler to have qualified for the Tokyo Games. Vinesh had also won a gold medal in Kiev a few days back

3. Bajrang Punia clinches gold in Rome

In wrestling, Bajrang Punia has clinched a gold medal by defeating Tumur Ochir of Mongolia in the Matteo Pallicone World Ranking Series event in Rome. Bajrang defeated Ochir 2-2 by criteria in the final of the 65kg freestyle. This is Bajrang’s second consecutive gold medal at the Matteo Pellicone event as he had finished on the top of the series in January 2020 as well.

4. Manish Kaushik clinches gold medal

In Boxing, Manish Kaushik clinched a gold medal at the Boxam International Tournament in Castellon, Spain. The 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Kaushik, beat Denmark’s Nikolai Terteryan with a split 3-2 decision in the men’s 63kg summit bout. In the women’s category, Jasmine settled for a silver in the 57kg after going down 0-5 in the final.

5. BCCI announces schedule for IPL 2021

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCCI has announced the schedule for the 14th edition Indian Premier League 2021 to be held in India. It will be held from April 9, 2021, with the first match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. The world’s largest cricket stadium – Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the final on 30th May 2021.

6. PV Sindhu wins silver medal in BWF Swiss Open

PV Sindhu settled for a silver medal in the BWF Swiss Open Super 300 at Basel, in the final of the women’s singles event on 7 March 2021. She defeated World No. 3 Carolina Marin 12-21, 5-21. She had entered the semifinal stage of a BWF tournament after 19 months. In her first semifinal after 13 tournaments, Sindhu had defeated Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt 22-20, 21-10.

7. UN Crime Congress begins in Japan’s Kyoto

The 14th UN congress on crime prevention and criminal justice is being held in the Japanese city Kyoto on March 7-12,2021. In the event, key issues related to criminal justice, strategies for crime prevention, and international cooperation in promoting the rule of law and preventing all forms of crime will be discussed. This is the 1st time that Japan is hosting the congress since 1970.

8. Schemes of WCD Min. classified under 3 schemes

For effective implementation of various schemes and programmes of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, all major schemes have been classified under 3 umbrella schemes viz. Mission Poshan 2.0, Mission Vatsalya and Mission Shakti. To strengthen nutritional content, the government is merging the Supplementary Nutrition Programme and Poshan Abhiyan to launch Mission POSHAN 2.0.

9. First flight to Bareilly flagged off

Hardeep Singh Puri, Civil Aviation Minister, on 8 March 2021, flagged off the first flight from Delhi to the newly upgraded Trishul Military Airbase, Bareilly Airport, Uttar Pradesh. The Bareilly airport has been upgraded for commercial flight operations under the Regional Connectivity Scheme of the Government of India. It marks the commencement of the 56th airport under the UDAN scheme.

10. GSDP estimated to contract 5.6% in Delhi

The Delhi economy is estimated to suffer a contraction of 5.6% in the gross state domestic product (GSDP) in the current financial year due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. This was informed by Lt Governor Anil Baijal on 8 March 2021. He outlined the measures taken by the Delhi government in dealing with the pandemic, such as raising the number of hospital beds, etc.

11. Apple to soon make iPhone 12 in India

Apple Inc. will manufacture Made-In-India iPhone 12 soon. Its latest model was launched in India on October 30, 2020. iPhone 12 will be manufactured at the Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn) facility in Tamil Nadu, both for the domestic as well as an export market. The unit also manufactures iPhone 11, which is the bestseller in India, as well as iPhone XR.

12. Banks lower their home loan rates

The interest rates on home loans have hit a decadal low as several leading banks slashed their lending rates in the past few days. Nationalized banks like State Bank of India, HDFC, ICICI and Kotak Mahindra Bank have reduced their rates to a 10-year low level. ICICI has slashed its interest rates to 6.7 percent in line with the SBI’s move offering the starting rate of 6.7 per cent.

13. Amit Shah visits Tamil Nadu and Kerala today

Union Home Minister Amit Shah was on a day-long visit to Tamil Nadu and Kerala on 7 March 2021. He launched Vijay Sankalp Mahasamaprk Abhiyaan – a door-to-door campaign in Suchindram Town. He also attended various important programmes, including a massive roadshow in Kanyakumari. In Thiruvananthapuram, he visited Shri Belur Math to offer prayers.

14. Bihar govt to vaccinate one lakh women

Bihar government set a target to vaccinate one lakh women against coronavirus across the state on the occasion of International Women’s Day. Special arrangements were made for women at all the vaccination centers. All the health officers at the center were women. E-rickshaws for women beneficiaries were also hired so that they could be taken to the vaccine unit.

15. Himachal police organizes ‘All Women Parade

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Himachal Pradesh Police Dept organized the ‘All Woman Parade’ in Shimla on 8 March 2021. The state police celebrated the day in 2 sessions. An exhibition on the theme, ‘Women in HP Police in 50 Years’ was displayed at Gaiety Theatre. It will continue till 14 Mar 2021. State governor Bandaru Dattatreya was the chief guest in the first session.

16. Bangladesh to confer Independence Award

Bangladesh has announced the names of 9 individuals and 1 organization for conferring the Independence Award, the highest civilian award of Bangladesh for the year 2021. Four individuals have been selected posthumously for the award. The award is being given since 1977. The recipients of the award get a gold medal and a cash reward of Taka 5 lakh.

17. Nepal PM takes India made vaccine Covishield

Nepal’s PM KP Sharma Oli received his first dose of India-made Covid-19 vaccine – Covishield on 7 March 2021. The second phase of the inoculation drive officially began in Nepal on 8 March 2021. Covishield, made by the Serum Institute of India (SII), is the only vaccine being administered in Nepal, which was provided under the Vaccine Maitri initiative.

18. Bangladesh to vaccinate foreign nationals

The government of Bangladesh has decided to include the foreign nationals residing in Bangladesh in the national vaccination programme of the country. The vaccination for foreign nationals will begin on 17th March 2021. In the current phase, people holding visas in the A/A1/A2/FA2/D/ND/M can register for taking the COVID 19 vaccine.

19. DMA honours Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan

Delhi Medical Association (DMA) honored Health Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, for his contribution to the medical fraternity and outstanding service during the COVID-19 Pandemic. He was honored during DMA’s 62nd Annual Delhi State Medical Conference. He informed that the Indian vaccines have shown some of the lowest Adverse Events Following Immunization, AEFI anywhere in the world.

20. Govt to increase number of Jan Aushadhi stores

Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan informed that the govt will increase the number of Jan Aushadhi stores to 10,000 by 2024. There are 7,500 Jan Aushadhi Kendras across various districts of the country currently. He informed this while inaugurating the Jan Aushadhi Centre at Deep Market, Ashok Vihar in New Delhi. More than 1cr people take medicines from Jan Aushadhi Kendras every month.

21. India will be self reliant in silk production

Textiles Minister Smriti Irani informed that India will be fully self-reliant in silk production in the next two years. She informed this while addressing the National level programme on the convergence of Agro-Sericulture and eradication of Thigh reeling in New Delhi on 7 March 2021. Raw silk production in the country has increased by 35 percent in the last six years.

22. Second part of Budget session commences

The second part of the Budget Session of Parliament commenced on 8 March 2021. In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rajya Sabha sat from 9 AM to 2 PM, while the Lok Sabha will function between 4 PM and 9 PM. The second leg of the session will conclude on 8 April 2021. The first part of the Budget Session had started on 29th January 2021.

23. PM to release 11 Volumes of Manu

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release 11 Volumes of Manu with commentaries by 21 scholars on shlokas of Srimad Bhagavadgita, on 9 March 21 at Lok Kalyan Marg, New Delhi. The Manu, published by Dharmarth Trust, is written with extraordinary variety and nuance of Indian calligraphy ranging from Shankar Bhashya to Bhasanuvada. Dr Karan Singh is the Chairman Trustee of Dharmarth Trust, J&K.

24. Textiles Ministry and Agri Ministry sign MoU

Ministry of Textiles and Ministry of Agriculture signed an MoU on 7 March 2021 to amplify sericulture activities in the country in the presence of Textiles Minister Smriti Irani and Minister of State for Agriculture Parshottam Rupala. The MoU will focus on establishing tree based agro-forestry models in sericulture and exploring possibilities of activities through Krishi Vigyan Kendras.

25. Two-day Gur Mahotsav underway in Lucknow

Gur Mahotsav or Jaggery Festival, two-day event was inaugurated by CM Yogi Adityanath on 6 March 2021 at Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. At the Jaggery Festival, farmers exhibited and sold different types of jaggery and jaggery products. The aim of this event is to motivate the jaggery producers to make high-quality jaggery & its products and create awareness about health benefits of jaggery.

26. Marathi actor Shrikant Moghe passes away

Veteran Marathi actor Shrikant Moghe passed away on 6 March 2021. Moghe was popular for his work in both Marathi and Hindi languages, in films and theatre. He was famous for his roles in Marathi films like Madhuchandra, Sinhaasan, Gammat Jammat, Umbaratha and Vasudev Balwant Phadke and Marathi stage plays Varyavarchi Varaat, Tuze Aahe Tujapashi and Lekure Udand Jali.

27. India’s biggest Kidney Dialysis Hospital

India’s biggest Kidney Dialysis Hospital was inaugurated on 7 March 2021 at Balasahib Gurudwara in Delhi. The Guru Harikshan Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Kidney Dialysis Hospital has been opened by Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee. The hospital is equipped with the most technically advanced medical facilities where services will be provided free of cost to the patients.

28. Jan Aushadhi Diwas 2021

Jan Aushadhi Divas or Generic Medicine Day is celebrated on 7 March every year in India. In 2021, the entire week from March 1 to March 7 was celebrated as Jan Aushadhi Week’ with different themes for each day. March 7 was celebrated with the theme of ‘Seva bhi, Rozgar bhi’. The day was first celebrated in the year 2019 making it the third-celebration in 2021.

29. India sends warships to Bangladesh

India has dispatched two warships to the historical port town of Mongla in Bangladesh to commemorate the 50th-anniversary celebration of the 1971 war of liberation. The warships, corvette INS Kulish and Patrol vessel Sumedha, will make the port call at mongla from March 8 to 10, 2021. This is the first time that any Indian naval ship is visiting the port of Mongla in Bangladesh.

30. PM Modi to inaugurate ‘Maitri Setu’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate ‘Maitri Setu’ between India and Bangladesh on 9 March 2021. The ‘Maitri Setu’ has been built over the Feni river connecting Sabroom in India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh. The construction of the 1.9 km long bridge was taken up by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd at a project cost of Rs. 133 crore.

31. Guyana, Ethiopia received vaccines from India

Guyana, Ethiopia received Made in India Covid-19 vaccines on 7 March 2021. Vaccines were dispatched under the Vaccine Maitri initiative of the Government of India. African nations Liberia and Somalia had received the Made in India Covid-19 vaccines on 6 March 2021.
