1. 07 December: Indian Armed Forces Flag Day
Every year Indian Armed Forces Flag Day is celebrated on December 7. The annual day is observed to honour the martyrs and the men in uniform who serve our country. It started when a committee set up under the then defence minister Baldev Singh on 28 August 1949 decided to observe a Flag Day annually on December 7.
2. International Civil Aviation Day: 7 December
The International Civil Aviation Day is observed on December 7 every year. The day is celebrated all over the world to increase awareness about the role and importance of the organisation, International Civil Aviation in air transport. International Civil Aviation Day 2020 theme is, “Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development”. This theme will be valid till the year 2023.
3. Scientists develop new anode material
A new composite anode material made by Indian scientists based on carbon nanostructures could produce more efficient lithium-ion batteries (LIB) with longer life. Scientists at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) have developed a novel anode material for lithium-ion battery (LIB) for electric vehicles (EVs).
4. ICICI Bank launches ‘iMobile Pay’
ICICI Bank has transformed its mobile banking app, iMobile, into an app that offers payments and banking services to customers of any bank. Called ‘iMobile Pay’, the app offers a unique combination of facilities of a payment app– such as enabling customers to pay to any UPI ID or merchants. The users of iMobile Pay can also transfer money to any bank account, payment app and digital wallet.
5. KVG Bank launches OD facility for farmers
Karnataka Vikas Grameen Bank (KVGB) has launched an overdraft (OD) facility for farmers. The farmers are provided with an OD facility based on the value of the land. The limit is capped to a maximum of Rs. 1.5 lakh per acre to irrigated lands and Rs. 1 lakh per acre to dry land. The facility can be used for working capital requirements such as maintenance of machinery and equipment, etc.
6. Japan to host FIFA Club World Cup in 2021
Japan will host the Club World Cup in its existing format in late 2021. It means there will be two Club World Cups in the same year, with Qatar hosting the 2020 edition between February 1 and 11, 2021 before another seven-team edition goes ahead in Japan in December 2021. Japan has hosted the Club World Cup eight times before, most recently in 2016.
7. Jehan becomes first Indian to win an F2 race
Jehan Daruvala became the first Indian to win a Formula 2 race during the Sakhir Grand Prix. A thrilling battle against F2 champion Mick Schumacher and Daniel Ticktum saw the 22-year-old Indian emerge on top in the support race of the season-ending Formula 1 Grand Prix. He, driving for Rayo Racing, had a good launch from second on the grid and was up alongside pole-sitter Daniel Ticktum.
8. Virat Kohli creates history in SENA countries
After clinching the T20I series against Australia in Dec 2020, Virat Kohli became the first Indian skipper to win a T20I series in all SENA countries – South Africa (2018), England (2018), New Zealand (2020), Australia (2020). Under Kohli’s leadership, India began 2020 with a 2-0 win over Sri Lanka and followed it up with complete annihilation of New Zealand by 5.0.
9. BVB wins national crossword contest
The team of V Krishna Sai Gayatri and Nellore Dharshita from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Hyderabad, won the grand finale of the 8th edition of the annual national inter-school CCCC Cryptic Crossword Contest (CCCC 2020). The team from Don Bosco Academy, Patna, secured the second position while The Mothers International School, New Delhi, were at the third spot.
10. GMDA to develop Gurugram’s first parking app
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is planning to develop the first dedicated parking app for Gurugram. The app will allow residents to find the nearest parking lot, know the number of parking spots available, and to book parking spots in advance. All existing government parking lots would also be integrated into the app and showcase all aforementioned relevant details.
11. Veteran actor Ravi Patwardhan passes away
Veteran actor Ravi Patwardhan, best known for starring in the Marathi show Aggabai Sasubai and 1980s Hindi films like Tezaab and Ankush, died in December 2020. His career in the entertainment industry spanned about four decades. He had also acted in several plays and featured in around 200 films.
12. Twin monkeys of world’s smallest species
Two twin monkeys, each two inches long and weighing only 10 grams, have been born at UK’s Chester Zoo. They are ‘no bigger than ping pong balls’ are one of the smallest monkeys in the world. The tiny primates have been identified as eastern pygmy marmosets, one of the smallest monkey species in the world. Eastern pygmy marmosets are usually native to the South American rainforests.
13. Japan, France, US plan joint military drills
Japan, France, and the United States will hold joint military drills on land and sea for the first time in May 2021. The exercises, conducted on one of Japan’s uninhabited outlying islands, will focus on providing relief efforts during a natural disaster, but parts could also form the basis for a defence against attack.
14. TV actress Divya Bhatnagar passes away
TV actress Divya Bhatnagar, who starred in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, passed away in December 2020. Divya’s other works include shows like Udaan, Jeet Gayi Toh Piyaa Morre and Vish among others.
15. Export Promotion Council to be set up
Commerce, Industry and AYUSH ministries have decided to work together to set up an Export Promotion Council to boost AYUSH exports. This decision was taken at a review meeting of AYUSH trade and industry by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. It was also decided that the entire AYUSH sector will work together to achieve price and quality competitiveness to boost exports.
16. 64th Mahaparinirvan Diwas
Dec 6 marks the death anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and the first Law Minister of Independent India. He took his last breath on this day in 1956 at the age of 65. His death anniversary is observed as the Mahaparinirvan Diwas. The historic Poona Pact of 1932 was signed by him which gave the Dalits a place in the general electoral list.
17. Pfizer seeks emergency use authorisation
Pfizer has sought emergency use authorisation for its COVID-19 vaccine in India. The firm has sought permission to import the vaccine for sale and distribution in the country. Pfizer India has become the first pharmaceutical firm to seek from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) an emergency use authorisation for its COVID-19 vaccine in the country,
18. Zydus Cadila gets nod for phase-III trials
Zydus Cadila Pharmaceuticals has received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India -DCGI to begin the phase-III clinical trials with its biological therapy Pegylated Interferon alpha-2b (PegiHep) in COVID-19 patients. PegiHep is an approved drug and is being re-purposed for the treatment of COVID. The trials will be conducted on 250 patients across 25 centres in India in Dec 20.
19. Bangladesh signs first PTA
Bangladesh has signed its first Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with Bhutan allowing duty-free access to a range of goods between the two countries. This is the first PTA Bangladesh has signed with any country in the world. In 1971, Bhutan was the first country in the world, followed by India as the second, to recognise Bangladesh as an independent country.
20. Kolkata Metro to run 204 trains daily
Kolkata Metro has started running additional services and extended timings of its services from 7 December 2020. Kolkata Metro will run 204 daily services instead of 190, from Monday to Saturday. The first service will start from both ends from Dum Dum and Kavi Subhash at 7 AM instead of 8 AM and from Noapara at 7.09 AM instead of 8.09 AM. Services will be available in every 7 minutes.
21. Bangalore University’s 3-day conference
Bangalore University in association with Indian Association for Science Fiction Studies is organising a three-day international virtual conference from 7 Dec 2020. Nobel Laureate Prof. Didier Patrick Oueloz will deliver the keynote address on Exo-planets: When the reality is beyond science fiction. Over 100 plenary speakers will deliver a speech on specialised areas in 12 streams.
22. Films Division screens Ambedkar documentary
Films Division of Ministry of Information & Broadcasting screened a biographical documentary on BR Ambedkar’s life and works as a mark of tribute, on his 64th death anniversary. Dr Jabbar Patel has directed ‘Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’ which was streamed on Films Division Website https://filmsdivision.org/ – Documentary of the Week section.
23. India’s first international REIT Fund of Funds
Kotak Mahindra AMC (Kotak Mutual Fund) has launched Kotak International REIT Fund of Funds. It is India’s first diversified REIT Mutual Fund. It is an open-ended mutual fund scheme that will invest in units of SMAM Asia REIT Sub Trust Fund. This mutual fund scheme will have a diversified investment portfolio comprising of listed REITS (Real Estate Investment Trusts).
24. Google Pay partners with Qwikcilver
Google Pay has ventured into the digital gift cards category by partnering with Pine Labs-owned Qwikcilver. It will issue real-time virtual gift cards to users from more than 150 online and offline brands, across 1500 cities in India. With this partnership, Qwikcilver’s consumer arm Woohoo will list on Google Pay’s in-app store Spot.
25. Everstone Capital to acquire stake in Calibre
Everstone Capital has signed an agreement to acquire a controlling stake in Calibre. Founded in 1984 by Ranjit Bhavnani, Calibre is a speciality ingredients maker dealing in iodine derivatives, persulfates and perchlorates. The company’s customers span the US, Europe and Asia, which contribute approximately two-thirds to its revenue.
26. DRDO-developed howitzer undergoes trial
The made in India howitzer Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System underwent trials at Ahmednagar in Maharashtra on 6 Dec 2020. The howitzer has been developed by DRDO and has a striking range of around 50 kms. The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) project was started in 2013 by DRDO to replace older guns in service in the Indian Army with a modern 155mm artillery gun.
27. Mount Everest: Nepal to announce revised
Nepal will announce the newly-measured height of Mount Everest on 8 Dec’20. Nepal undertook the initiative to measure the height after speculations that the height might not be the actual length after the 2015 earthquake. Measured in 1954 by Survey of India, 8,848 metres is the widely accepted and recognized height of Sagarmatha, the Nepali name for the famed world’s tallest peak.
28. China’s Sinovac secures $500 mn in funding
China’s Sinovac Biotech has secured approximately $500 million in funding for COVID-19 vaccine development. It expects to be able to manufacture 300 million vaccine doses annually, aims to complete construction of a second production facility by the end of 2020 to increase annual COVID-19 vaccine production capacity to 600 million doses. The investor is Sino Biopharmaceutical Ltd.
29. Indonesia receives first vaccine from Sinovac
Indonesia received its first shipment of coronavirus vaccine from China on 6 Dec 2020. It received 1.2 million doses from China’s Sinovac Biotech Ltd., a vaccine Indonesia has been testing since August 2020. Late-stage trials of the Sinovac vaccine are also underway in Brazil and Turkey, with interim results on efficiency from Brazil expected by mid-December 2020.
30. PM Modi to inaugurate India Mobile Congress
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 4th India Mobile Congress which is scheduled to start from December 8, 2020. The 4th edition of the three-day telecom industry event will be held online for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The title theme of IMC 2020 will be inclusive Innovation – Smart, Secure and Sustainable.
31. Manu Mukherjee passes away
Veteran Bengali actor Manu Mukherjee passed away in December 2020. He had started his film career with Mrinal Sen’s ‘Nil Akasher Niche’ (1958) and earned plaudits with his roles in Satyajit Ray’s ‘Joy Baba Felunath’ and ‘Ganashatru! He was conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tele-Samman Awards 2015.
32. DLF to invest to develop data centre in Noida
DLF will invest around Rs. 130 crores over the next 18 months to develop a data centre in Noida as it seeks to encash rising demand for data storage capacity. The data centre project will have 3.7 lakh sq ft space with proper infrastructure, including high power capacity. The data centre will be part of a 25-acre commercial project that has a total development potential of 35-40 lakh sq ft.
33. QRMP scheme launched for GST payers
The government has launched the Quarterly Return filing & Monthly Payment of Taxes (QRMP) scheme for small taxpayers under GST system. Taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover of up to 5 crore in the preceding financial year and have filed their October GSTR-3B (sales) return by November 30, 2020, are eligible for this scheme. This will be in effect from January 1, 2021.
34. Daimler India to set up 350 new dealerships
Daimler India plans to have at least 350 dealerships across India. The company plans to implement this strategy in the next two years. It will also look to enhance the digitalisation process including the sales experience. It currently uses its manufacturing facility in Orgadama, near Chennai to produce 9 to 55-tonne trucks as well as BharatBenz buses, Mercedes-Benz coaches and bus chassis.
