1. Ramesh Lakshminarayanan: New CIO of HDFC Bank
HDFC Bank has hired Ramesh Lakshminarayanan as its next chief information officer (CIO). The appointment comes nearly four months after the resignation of its then CIO Munish Mittal. Lakshminarayanan joins from rating agency Crisil, where he was serving as the chief technology and information officer. He has also had stints with Kotak Mahindra Bank, Citibank and ABN Amro Bank.
2. Rajasthan to borrow Rs 97000 cr
Rajasthan govt has decided to go for Option-1 to meet the GST implementation shortfall. In the 41st meeting of the GST Council in August 2020, Centre had given two borrowing options to States to meet GST compensation requirement for the current financial year. States can borrow either 97,000 cr from special window facilitated by the RBI or 2,35,000 crore rupees from the market.
3. Flipkart invests in USPL
Flipkart Group is set to buy a stake in Universal Sportsbiz Pvt. Ltd (USPL), which owns youth fashion brands Ms.Taken, Wrogn and Single. This is Flipkart’s third major investment in an offline fashion retailer this year. In July 2020, it had invested ₹1,500 crores in Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd to pick up a 7.8% stake, and ₹260 crores to acquire a stake in Arvind Youth Brands.
4. Wynn invests $80 million
Wynn Resorts Ltd. is investing $80 mn in a newly reorganized joint venture to pursue online betting in the US, marking the latest attempt by casino giants to tap the fast-growing market. Wynn had established a partnership two years ago with BetBull Ltd., a European online gaming operator, to pursue sports betting. The new venture is owned 71% by Wynn and 29% by BetBull’s former shareholders.
5. Punjab government constitutes reform teams
Punjab government has constituted District School Education Reform Teams to monitor the activities of schools. The concerned District Education Officer (Sec. Edu.) would be the head of the District Education Reform Team. These teams will coordinate to the respective DM/BM of their district and assist in the qualitative improvement of education by formulating its plan.
6. Rafael Nadal: 4th player to earn 1000 wins
Rafael Nadal has become only the fourth player to earn 1,000 Open Era singles victories. Nadal achieved the milestone after securing a 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 win over Feliciano Lopez in the ongoing Paris Masters. With this win, he joined Jimmy Connors (1,274), Roger Federer (1,242) and Ivan Lendl (1,068) in the 1,000-win club.
7. Wildlife board set up in Jammu and Kashmir
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has constituted a 25-member wildlife board. It will advise it in the selection and management of areas to be declared as protected areas and in the formulation of policy for protection and conservation of wildlife and plants. Lt Governor would be the chairman of the board among the other nine eminent members.
8. Uttarakhand CM sanctions Rs 29.83 crore
Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat has sanctioned Rs 29.83 cr for developing infrastructure facilities for the 38th National Games to be held during 2021. The amount has been approved for the first phase of three of the seven works recommended for the development of infrastructure facilities. He has also given approval to Rs 5 crores for the
construction of an international sports complex.
9. ICICI Bank launches ‘Mine’ for millennials
ICICI Bank has announced the launch of India’s first comprehensive banking programme for millennials. Inspired by ‘Millennial Network, the proposition is called ICICI Bank Mine’ and offers an instant savings account, a feature-driven iMobile application. Any millennial-aged up to 35 years can apply digitally for an ICICI Bank Mine’ account from November 6, 2020.
10. 40th SAARCFINANCE Meeting held
RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das inaugurated and chaired the 40th meeting of the SAARCFINANCE Governors’ Group on 4 Nov 2020. He highlighted the close partnership and co-operation among the member countries in jointly fighting the pandemic. Das is also the chairperson of the SAARCFINANCE, which is a network of central bank governors and finance secretaries of the SAARC region.
11. PIF to buy 2.04% stake in Reliance Retail
The Public Investment Fund (PIF), the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, will invest 9,555 crores for a 2.04% stake in Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd (RRVL), a subsidiary of Reliance Industries. The transaction values RRVL at a pre-money equity value of 4.587 lakh crore. The investment in RRVL follows PIF’s earlier acquisition of a 2.32% stake in Jio Platforms.
12. Dilip Rath elected to IDF board
Dilip Rath, Chairman, National Dairy Development Board has been unanimously elected to the Board of International Dairy Federation (IDF). He is associated with IDF for the last 10 years as Member Secretary of Indian National Committee and as a member of the Standing Committee on Dairy Policy and Economics. He played a key role in signing the Dairy Declaration at the IDF World Dairy Summit.
13. Bangladesh signs deal with India
Bangladesh has signed a deal with the Serum Institute of India to buy 30 million doses of potential coronavirus vaccine being developed by AstraZeneca. AstraZeneca’s experimental COvID-19 vaccine is seen as one of the most advanced candidates in the race against the novel coronavirus. 5 mn doses of vaccine per month would be purchased through Bangladesh’s drug maker, Beximco Pharmaceuticals.
14. Shri Thanedar elected as legislature in US
Shri Thanedar, an Indian-origin millionaire businessman who ran for Governor two years ago, has been elected to the House of Representatives in Michigan with 93 per cent votes. Thanedar, 65, also a scientist, raised a record-breaking USD 438,620, primarily from his own wealth, in the state House primary against six other opponents of the Democratic Party.
15. Adani renames Australian group Bravus
Indian conglomerate Adani group’s mining company, the Carmichael coalmine in central Queensland on November 5 renamed its Australian operations as ‘Bravus’. The name change marked the Indian company’s tenth year in Australia, as well as the significant progress they’ve made on Carmichael thermal coal mine in central Queensland, which may generate up to 10,000 jobs.
16. PM Modi, Italy PM to hold virtual summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Italian counterpart Giuseppe Conte will hold a Virtual Bilateral Summit on 6 Nov. The Summit will give an opportunity to the two leaders to comprehensively review the broad framework of the bilateral relationship and exchange views on major regional and global issues of mutual concern. Italy is India’s 5th largest trading partner in Europe.
17. AAI signs MoU with NTPC to set up solar plants
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with an NTPC subsidiary to promote usage of electric vehicles and setup solar power plants at its airports. NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN), a subsidiary of NTPC, will be provided adequate land and rooftop space free of cost at identified AAl airports to set up solar power plants.
18. Jharkhand revoke general consent for CBI probe
Jharkhand became the eighth state to withdraw general consent for the CBI probe. Several states, including West Bengal, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Tripura, Mizoram, Kerala and Maharashtra had earlier withdrew the general consent that allows the central probe agency to conduct investigations in the state without prior permission from the state government.
19. BJP appoints 70 senior leaders in Delhi
The BJP in Delhi has engaged 70 experienced leaders and functionaries to assist its councillors to maintain cleanliness and effective sanitation services during the festival season. Each leader will be assigned an assembly seat where he or she will be working closely with the local councillors to ensure timely garbage removal, cleaning of roads and urinals.
20. IACG Naravane conferred honorary rank of Gen.
Indian Army chief General M M Naravane was conferred the honorary rank of General of the Nepali Army by Nepal’s President Bidya Devi Bhandari at a special ceremony in Kathmandu. The tradition, which started in 1950, reflects the strong ties between the two militaries. General Naravane was presented with a sword, insignia and a certificate of conferment order by the President.
21. NPCI allows WhatsApp Payments Service
The National Payments Corporation of India has given its nod to WhatsApp Inc. to offer payments services via the Unified Payments Interface. This ends a two-year wait for WhatsApp Pay, which has so far been operating pilot operations for users in India. Currently, in the beta phase, as part of the pilot operations, WhatsApp Pay serves about 1 million customers.
22. Mumbai enters IPL final for 6th time
Mumbai Indians beats Delhi Capitals by 57 runs in the first qualifier, to set sights on their fifth Indian Premier League title. This is the sixth time that the Rohit Sharma-led franchise has reached the summit clash. In 2019, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings played in the final of Vivo IPL 2019 where Mumbai defeated Chennai by 1 run to become champions for the record 4th time.
23. AWS to open 2nd cloud region in India by 2022
Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon.com would launch a second cloud infrastructure region in India by mid-2022. The upcoming AWS Asia Pacific region in Hyderabad is part of Amazon’s continued investments in India. AWS launched its Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region in June 2016 to help customers in India save costs, increase speed-to-market of new products, etc.
24. Tourist Facilitation Centre facility
Union Minister of State for Tourism& Culture Prahlad Singh Patel has inaugurated the “Tourist Facilitation Centre” facility. It has been constructed under the project “Development of Guruvayur, Kerala” under PRASHAD Scheme of the Ministry of Tourism. The project for “Development of Guruvayur” was approved by the Ministry of Tourism with the cost of Rs. 45.36 crores in March 2017.
25. A K Gupta: New MD & CEO of ONGC Videsh
ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL) has announced the appointment of A K Gupta as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company. OVL is the overseas arm of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). Gupta has been serving as the Director-Operations of ONGC Videsh. He has over 3 decades of experience of handling domestic and overseas oil and gas exploration and production operations.
26. ‘Till We Win’: Book on COVID-19
The book, titled “Till We Win” wil hit the stands in November 2020. It has been co-written by leading public policy and health systems expert Chandrakant Lahariya and renowned vaccine researcher and virologist Gagandeep Kang. 27. Day for Preventing Exploitation of Environment
The United Nations General Assembly in 2001 declared Nov 6 as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. This day is observed to raise awareness about the protection of the environment and ecosystem in any circumstance. It aims to ensure that the environment is not harmed during any armed conflict in any part of the world.
28. Tanzania’s Magufuli sworn in for second term
Tanzania’s populist President John Magufuli has been sworn into office for a second five-year term. Magufuli received 12.5 million -or 85 percent – of the total votes polled, while his main challenger, CHADEMAS Tundu Lissu, got 1.9 million or 13 per cent. Magufuli’s CCM party has also retained power in the semi-autonomous Indian Ocean archipelago of Zanzibar with 76 per cent of the vote.
29. US formally exits Paris Climate Accord
The United States has become the first country to formally exit the Paris climate agreement. The agreement’s key aim is to keep global temperatures rise in this century well below 2 degree Celsius above the pre-industrialisation levels and to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degree Celsius. The agreement came into force on November 4, 2016, and 189 countries have adopted it.
30. SEBI enhances foreign investment limit
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has enhanced the foreign investment limit per fund house from 300 mn USD to 600 million USD. A surge of interest in international investing pushed some AMCs close to the previous foreign investment limit of USD 300 million. In the fund of funds (FoF) category, overseas assets under management (AUM) touched ₹6,496 cr at the end of Sept 2020.
31. Connaught in London named world’s best bar
Connaught, London’s stylish hotel lounge, was named the World’s Best Bar on 5 Nov 2020. It unseated Dante, in New York, which fell to No. 2 from the top spot in 2019. The World’s 50 Best Bars is owned and organized by William Reed Business Media, which also oversees the World’s Best Restaurants. The global restaurant awards have been postponed until 2021.
32. OPEC member countries invited to invest
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has invited OPEC member countries to invest in India. The minister co-chaired the 4th high-level meeting of the India-OPEC Energy Dialogue on 5 Nov 2020 along with Secretary-General of OPEC Secretariat Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo. The virtual meeting was also joined by OPEC Member countries, CMD and MDs of India’s oil and gas industry.
33. ‘Panchagavya’ Deepawali gift packs prepared
In Madhya Pradesh, the members of the Livelihood Mission of the state have prepared an exclusive gift pack containing 26 items useful for Deepawali Puja. The uniqueness of this Deepawali gift pack is that it is purely made from anchagavya. The gift pack made by women self-help groups is available at just Rs 399 at various Malls in the state.
34. Chhattisgarh govt constitutes a committee
In Chhattisgarh, the State Task Force Committee has been constituted for better interdepartmental coordination for COVID-19 vaccination. A database of health workers working in all government and private health institutions of Chhattisgarh is being prepared as per the guidelines of the Government of India. This database will be helpful to decide the priority for COVID-19 vaccination.
35. Special cell to be set up in Maharashtra
A special cell will be set up in Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office to expedite the schemes for women and to address the problems in the existing schemes. The CM also assured to consider the demands to provide a wide range of online sales platforms for women-made products anda mart on the lines of ‘Delhi Haat’ for the sale of women’s self-help group products.
36. New air service started between India and Bangladesh
New air service between India and Bangladesh under the air-bubble arrangement started on 5 Nov 2020. The Vistara airlines Ilaunched its biweekly flight from Delhi to Dhaka with the first flight arriving in Dhaka from Delhi on 5 Nov 2020. The air-bubble arrangement between the two countries has helped people who need to travel for medical, business and other purposes.
37. Health Ministry issues new guidelines
Health Ministry has issued new guidelines for international arrivals. Before planning for travel, all travellers should submit self-declaration form on the online portal www.newdelhiairport.in at least 72 hours before the scheduled travel or physically after arrival at the respective health counters. They should also give an undertaking through concerned airlines.
38. Fare bands for domestic flights extended
The fare bands within which the airlines have to operate have been extended upto 24th February 2021 by the Civil Aviation Ministry. These fare bands came into force with effect from 21st May 2020. At present, the airlines can operate upto 60
percent of their capacity. As the passenger traffic increases, the upper cap would be revised to 70-75 percent of normal capacity in the coming days.
39. India hosts 5th Joint Working Group on Coal
India successfully hosted 5th Joint Working Group (JWG) on Coal between India and Indonesia on 5 Nov 2020. The JWG was co-chaired from the Indian side by Vinod Kumar Tiwari, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Coal, Govt of India and by Jonson Pakpahan, Director for Mineral and Coal, Non-Tax State Revenue of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Republic of Indonesia, from Indonesian side.
