1. International Holocaust Remembrance Day: 27 Jan

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed on 27 Jan every year. It marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945. Over a million men, women, and children were killed in it. The official theme for 2021 is Facing the Aftermath: Recovery and Reconstitution after the Holocaust.

2. IMF projects over 11% growth rate for India

International Monetary Fund has projected an 11.5 percent growth rate for India in 2021. With the latest projections, India has regained the tag of the fastest developing economies of the world. In 2020, the Indian economy is estimated to have contracted by 8%. In IMFs latest World Economic Outlook Update, China is next with 8.1 percent growth in 2021 followed by Spain and France.

3. India’s GDP to contract 8% this fiscal: FICCI

India’s GDP is expected to contract by 8 percent in 2020-21, according to the latest round of FICCIs Economic Outlook Survey. The annual median growth forecast is based on responses from leading economists representing the industry, banking, and financial services sector. The median growth forecast for agriculture and allied activities has been pegged at 3.5 percent for 2020-21.

4. BSF unfurls tallest 131-ft-high Tricolour

The Border Security Force unfurled a 131-feet-high tricolor along the Indo-Pak border in Jammu district on Republic Day on 26 Jan 2021. The flag measuring 30×20 feet is the tallest in the Jammu region, flying at a 131-feet-high pole. The hoisting of the flag at Octroi was sponsored by the Lupin Foundation, the J-K tourism, and the administration.

5. IRDAI extends CKYCR to legal entities

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has asked reporting entities to upload KYC data pertaining to accounts of legal entities opened on or after April 1, 2021, onto the Central KYC Registry (CKYCR). The Central Registry of Securitization and Asset Reconstruction and Security interest of India (CERSAI) has been authorized to perform the functions of the CKYCR.

6. Electric buses flagged off in Andaman

Admiral (Retd.) D K Joshi, the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands,flagged-off a fleet of electric buses on 26 Jan 2021. The project for 40 electric buses is being executed by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited(NVVN Limited), a 100% subsidiary of NTPC Limited. The introduction of the buses will help cut down tailpipe emissions as well as provide comfortable public transport.

7. President awards Tatrakshak medals

President Ram Nath Kovind has awarded Presidents Tatrakshak Medal (PTM) and Tatrakshak Medal (TM) to the Indian Coast Guard personnel. They have been awarded for their act of conspicuous gallantry and distinguished/ meritorious service. These awards are being given to the personnel of the Indian Coast Guard on Republic Day and Independence Day every year, since 26 Jan 1990 onwards.

8. Overseas investment by dips 42% to $1.45 bn

Overseas investment by domestic firms fell by over 42% to $1.45 billion in December 2020, according to Reserve Bank’s data. In the year-ago period, companies in India had invested $2.51 billion in their foreign firms (joint ventures / wholly-owned units). In November 2020, the total outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) was of $1.06 billion.

9. 2058 CCTV cameras installed in Cyberabad

Cyberabad Police Commissionerate unveiled 2058 new CCTV cameras under the initiative of Nenu Saitham on 25 Jan 2021. The project was inaugurated by Dr. M. Mahendar Reddy, DGP, Telangana State Police at Gachibowli Police Station. Mahendar Reddy also inaugurated three-camera mounted vehicles and distributed a CCTV maintenance kit to 19 technical persons.

10. CO-19 vaccine tableau features at R-Day parade

The Department of Biotechnology highlighted the Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan and showcased the COVID-19 vaccine development process in their tableau at Rajpath on 26 Jan 2021. The theme of the tableau was Atma-Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan: COVID. The Department of biotechnology is focused on creating an ecosystem to foster innovative product development, with societal relevance.

11. Group Captain Kesavan Harisankar conferred VSM

Group Captain Kesavan Nair Harisankar of Southern Air Command has been conferred the prestigious Presidential award Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) on the occasion of Republic Day. He is functioning as Command Engineering Officer and presently posted at Southern Air Command since July 2020. He joined Indian Air Force (IAF) Aeronautical Engineering Mechanical Branch in 1990.

12. Annual ‘Adivasi Mela’ commences in Bhubaneswar

The 15-day annual tribal fair or Adivasi Mela; commenced on 26 Jan 2021 at Bhubaneswar Adivasi Exhibition Ground. The organizer of the tribal fair informed that the fair has been conducted annually since 1951 and is the oldest fair in the country. The fair will remain open for the public from 11 am to 7 pm every day till February 9.

13. Carlos Holmes Trujillo passes away

Colombia’s Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo passed away in Jan 2021. He has been replaced by Fernando Navarro, who was previously head of the Colombian armed forces. He became defense minister in November 2019, after serving as foreign minister. He was also the mayor of Cali from 1988-1990 and held several ministerial and diplomatic positions during his decades-long political career.

14. Twitter acquires newsletter startup Revue

Twitter has announced that it has acquired the newsletter startup Revue, a Dutch startup that allows users to publish and monetize email newsletters. Twitter will continue to operate Revue as a standalone product, with its team remaining focused on improving the ways writers create their newsletters, build their audience, and get paid for their work.

15. 223 more villages to get 24-hr power supply

Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar has announced that 223 more villages will be included under the Mhara Gaon-Jagmag Gaon scheme for round-the-clock power supply. With these 223 villages, the number of villages under the scheme has increased to 5,223. Haryana government launched the voluntary scheme Mhara Gaon – Jagmag Gaon in July 2015.

16. Pune schools launch ‘MES Subodhwani’ web radio

MES (Maharashtra Education Society), Sou Vimlabai Garware School, and Vidnyan Bharati have joined hands to launch MES Subodhwani, a web radio, which will get broadcast thrice a week. Students would have to download a mobile app, through which the radio would be available for one hour each, three days a week.

17. Akshay Kumar launches mobile action game FAU-G

Akshay Kumar has announced on social media the launch of the mobile action game Fearless and United Guards (FAU-G) on the occasion of the 72nd Republic Day. nCore games FAU-G has crossed 5 million registrations on the Google Play Store. 20% of the net revenue generated will be donated to @BharatKeVeer Trust #FAUG. FAU-G was first announced after PUBG was banned in India in September 2020.

18. Hindustan Zinc CFO Swayam Saurabh resigns

Hindustan Zinc has announced the resignation of CFO Swayam Saurabh. It has reported a 36% increase in net profit at Rs. 2,200 crores in the quarter ending 31 December 2020. Hindustan Zinc Limited is an Indian integrated mining and resources producer of zinc, lead, silver, and cadmium. It is headquartered in Udaipur and Arun Mishra is its CEO.

19. Ravin Khosla takes command of Gajraj Corps

The command of the Indian Army’s Frontier Gajraj Corps was taken over from Lt General Shantanu Dayal to Lt General Ravin Khosla. He comes to Gajraj Corps from Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence (Army), Delhi where he was holding the appointment of Director-General. For his illustrative service, he has been awarded the Ati Vishist Sewa Medal, Sena Medal, and the Vishisht Seva Medal.

20. 9th round of Corps Commander-level talks

The 9th round of the China-India Corps Commander Level Meeting was held on the Chinese side of the Moldo-Chushul border meeting point on 24 January 2021. During the meeting, the two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on disengagement along the Line of Actual Control in the Western Sector of China-India border areas.

21. UK: 1st to surpass over 1 lakh COVID deaths

In the United Kingdom, more than one lakh people have died with COVID-19. The toll has risen by an average of over 1,000 per day. A total of 100,162 deaths have been recorded in the UK, the first European nation to pass the landmark. The UK is the fifth country to pass 100,000 deaths, coming after the US, Brazil, India, and Mexico.

22. Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2020-21

In Cricket, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2020-21 is being played from 26-31 January 2021, at Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad. The stadium is now the largest in India in terms of capacity. As per the schedule, four quarter-finals were played from 26-27 January 2021, two semi-finals will be played on January 29, 2021, with the final scheduled on January 31, 2021.

23. Zoological Park inaugurated in Nagpur

In Maharashtra, CM Uddhav Thackeray inaugurated Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park in Nagpur on 26 Jan 2021. It is spread across an area of 1,914 hectares and includes a wildlife sanctuary, Indian safari, African safari biodiversity park, and night safari. He also announced that Gondwana Theme Park will be set up in Nagpur to introduce the culture of Vidarbha tribals.

24. Kaushambi district of UP becomes Corona free

Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh has been declared Corona free. This is the first district of the state where not a single person has the infection of coronavirus. As of 23 Jan 2021, a total of 2267 Covid infected patients were found in the district out of which 27 died during the treatment. By 24 January 2021, the number of infected patients in the district declined to zero.

25. India inks partnership framework with IEA

India has signed a strategic partnership framework with the International Energy Agency (IEA), on 27 Jan 2021. IEA is the world’s premier energy monitor. India is the third-largest energy consumer globally. IEAs 30 member countries hold 1.55 bn barrels in public emergency oil stocks. In addition, 650 mn barrels are held by industry under govt obligations and can be released as needed.

26. Sanofi to produce 100 mn Pfizer vaccine doses

French pharma giant Sanofi will produce more than 100 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech by the end of 2021. Sanofi is also working on another Covid-19 vaccine candidate with U.S. firm Translate Bio which uses mRNA technology, similar to the approach of Pfizer/BioNTech. Phase I trials are expected to start this quarter.

27. Dr. Harsh Vardhan addresses an event

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare digitally addressed a high-level virtual event titled “Family Planning 2020: Celebrating Progress, Transforming for the future”, on 26 Jan 21. An Annual Progress Report for 2019-2020 was also released. India was one of the first countries in the world to formulate a National Family Planning Program way back in 1952.

28. Adani Ports signs MoU with Gujarat govt

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ)has inked an MoU with the Gujarat government. It will explore the possibilities of the development of a dedicated air cargo complex and multi-modal logistics park in the state. APSEZ informed that the aforesaid evaluation is subject to various regulatory and legal permissions/ approval and clearances including land acquisition.

29. IOC, Tokyo Olympics to unveil a rule book

The playbook is the rule book that the International Olympic Committee and Tokyo organizers are set to launch in the coming few days. It will explain how 15,400 Olympic and Paralympic athletes and others can safely enter Japan. The rollout at Olympic headquarters Switzerland is also planned for 4 February 2021.

30. Kolkata gets boat library

The West Bengal Transport Corporation in collaboration with a heritage book store has launched a children’s library on a boat in Kolkata. It is a first of its kind initiative. The boat library would take people on a three-hour-long trip. There will be three trips on all weekdays. A ride on the boat would cost Rs 100 for adults and Rs 50 for children.

31. ‘Aqua Rejuvenation Plant’ unveiled

CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute has unveiled the 1st wastewater treatment technology model. It purifies wastewater for irrigation purposes. Aqua Rejuvenation Plant (ARP) has a six-stage purification profile for the comprehensive treatment of wastewater. The approx. 24,000 liters of water that can be rejuvenated will be sufficient for almost 4 acres of agricultural land.
