1. India rank 131 in global internet speed

In September this year, India ranked 131 out of 138 in the global mobile internet speed rankings. South Korea topped the list with an average mobile internet speed of 121.00 Mbps.

Neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal ranked higher than India on the global internet speed index. Report prepared by Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index.

2. Lee Kun-Hee, behind Samsung’s rise dies at 78

Lee Kun-hee, who built Samsung into a global giant of smartphones, televisions and computer chips died on 25 Oct in Seoul, the South Korean capital.

He was twice convicted and, in a pattern that has become typical in South Korea, twice pardoned – for white-collar crimes committed along the way.

Samsung announced the death but did not specify the cause.

3. Film on women empowerment and

Hyderabad police makes a film on women empowerment titled ‘Ammay!’

The Rachakonda police, through Margdarshak, She for Her and Student Police Cadets programmes.

The short film is about how women should react when faced with unexpected situations and aims to empower women to protect themselves from possible threat and danger situations.

4. Bharat Biotech is ready to launch Covaxin

Bharat Biotech, the company which is developing one of India’s indigenous vaccine candidates called Covaxin, expects that the shot will be ready by June 2021.

Drugs Controller General of India’s (DCGI) subject expert committee has recommended granting permission for phase 3 linical trials for Covaxin.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three development projects in Gujarat.

Inaugurating Kisan Sarvoday Yojana, under which farmers will be able to avail power supply from 5am to 9pm for irrigation purposes.

6. The Noida authority has sanctioned ₹6.5 crore

The Noida authority has sanctioned ₹6.5 crore for a mission that goals to clean up town’s foremost drain, Kondli drain.

The 17-kilometre-long irrigation drain begins from Delhi’s Ashok Nagar space and merges with Yamuna in Sector 168, after passing by means of a number of residential sectors of town, reminiscent of sectors. The Kondli drain, owned by the Uttar Pradesh irrigation division.

7. PM inaugurates world’s longest temple ropeway

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Girnar Ropeway in Gujarat October 24.

The ropeway is constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 130 crore which included the construction of the lower and upper terminals as well as nine poles supporting the rope.

Girnar ropeway is a ropeway on Mount Girnar in Junagadh district.

8. PMPML: ‘smart bus service’ to airport

PMPML started its ‘smart’ bus service for commuters travelling to and from the airport on 24 Oct.

With 43 buses operating on five routes, connecting various parts of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad with the airport.

Pune MP and Chairman of Airport Advisory Committee, Girish Bapat, inaugurated the service by green flagging a bus.

9. Web portal launches for e-vehicle subsidy

In a bid to encourage commuters to switch to electric vehicles, the Delhi government on 24 Oct launched a portal, ev.delhi.gov.in.

The portal will ensure a hassle-free procedure, buyers will receive subsidy within three days.

Disbursement of incentives under the government’s EV policy that was notified on August 7 to help reduce air pollution in the Capital.

10. New super-white paint that exhibits sunlight

New ‘super-white’ paint that reflects 95.5 % of sunlight off buildings is so good at reducing heat it could one day replace AC.

Scientists at Purdue developed the new acrylic using calcium carbonite fillers.

It remains 10 degrees C cooler at night than the ambient temperature and 1.7 degrees C lower in daylight.

It could keep buildings cooler and prevent outdoor machinery from overheating.

11. Ant Group IPO pricing

Chinese fintech giant Ant Group will be the world’s biggest, according to pricing determined.

It is the first time pricing of the initial public offering has been determined outside New York.

The listing could be the world’s largest initial public offering, surpassing the record set by Saudi Aramco’s $29.4 billion floats last December.

12. Facebook May See US Antitrust Charge

Facebook may face US anti-trust charges as soon as November, the Washington Post reported on 24 Oct.

Mark Zuckerberg was interviewed at an FTC investigative hearing as part of the government’s antitrust probe into the company.

In July 2019, Facebook agreed to pay a record-breaking $5 bilion fine to resolve a separate FTC probe into the company’s privacy practices

13. UP: A glass room for women grievances

The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government launched Mission Shakti programme as an initiative to improve women safety in the state and sensitise the police and residents of UP towards women’s security.

Under the same programme, now all police stations in Uttar Pradesh would have to set up a glass room for women complainants to register their complaints before women police personnel.

14. Ynsect to build world’s biggest bug farm

French Startup Ynsect Will Build World’s Biggest Indoor Insect Farm.

Ynsect raised $224 million from investors including Hollywood star Robert Downey Jrs Footprint Coalition to build a second insect farm in Amiens in northern France.

The highest vertical farm in the world and the first carbon-negative vertical farm in the world.

15. Delhi CM Inaugurates Seelampur-Shastri Park

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal threw open the much-awaited flyovers at Seelampur and Shastri park to the public in northeast Delhi.

The distance between Inter-State Bus Terminus and U.P. border can now be covered in 10 minutes.

The estimated project cost of the Seelampur-Shastri Park flyover package was Rs303.31 C, but the Delhi gov completed both the flyovers and spent only Rs 250 C.

16. World Cup Team Star Tanmay Srivastava Retires

Tanmay Srivastava, the top run-getter at the 2008 U-19 World Cup that India won under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, announced his retirement on 24 Oct.

The left-handed Srivastava, who scored 262 runs at 52.4 in that tournament, announced the decision to retire on Twitter.

He was the highest run-getter of the 2008 Under-19 World Cup, which India won under Kohli’s leadership.

17. Spacex launches 60 Starlink satellites

SpaceX has launched another batch of 60 Starlink satellites, the primary ingredient for its forthcoming global broadband internet service.

This is the fifteenth Starlink launch thus far, and SpaceX has now launched nearly 900 of the small, low Earth orbit satellites to date.

SpaceX’s goal with Starlink is to provide broadband service globally.

18. Apple to launch AirTags in November

Apple is rumoured to introduce new AirPods in November, and the company may unveil these AirTags alongside.

Past leaks suggest that AirTags are expected to support magnetic charging and be completely waterproof.

Apple is expected to host a special event on November 17 wherein it is tipped to launch ARM-powered Mac computers.

19. Andorra joins IMF as its 190th member

Andorra, officially the Principality of Andorra, has joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF), thus becoming its 190th member.

It is a microstate situated between France and Spain. Ambassador Elisenda Vives Balmaña signed the IMF’s Articles of Agreement at a ceremony in Washington D.C. on 16 October 2020.

Andorra’s initial quotal in the IMF is SDR 82.5million (about US $ 116.4 million).

20. Mastercard partners with Atlantis

Mastercard in partnership with Atlantis has announced the expansion of the Digital First Program in India.

It will provide users with a technology solution that will enable them to enjoy a best-in-class digital banking experience.

Users will be able to use their cards/accounts for digital transactions within minutes of application, enabled by a fully digital online application.

21. Hong Kong BNO passports not as valid

Chinese foreign ministry will consider not recognizing Hong Korng British national overseas (BNO) passports as valid travel documents.

This was announceda day after the British government’s announcement of new visa rules for British National Overseas citizens in HK.

As per the new visa rule, BNO Visa holders will have the right to work and study in the UK for a period of five years.

22. 47 additional ITBP outposts to be set up

The Govt has given consent to Indo-Tibetan Border Police, ITBP to set up 47 additional border outposts to step up vigil along the border.

Minister of State for Home G. Kishan Reddy announced while addressing the 59th Raising Day of Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Apart from border security, ITBP is fighting terrorism in J&K, and making a significant contribution in peace mission abroad.

23. 1st batch of 3 women pilots at Kochi

Indian Navy has operationalized the first batch of three Women Pilots on Dornier Aircraft.

They graduated as Fully operational Maritime Reconnaissance MR Pilots.

The three women pilots are Lieutenant Divya Sharma, Lieutenant Shubhangi Swaroop, and Lieutenant Shivangi.

They initially underwent basic flying training partly with Indian Air Force and partly with the Navy prior to the DOFT course

24. Govt extends due date for filing GST return

The government has extended the due date for filing GST Annual Return in FORM GSTR-9 and GSTR-9A and Reconciliation Statement in FORM GSTR-9C for Financial Year 2018-19 from 31st October to 31st December 2020.

The filing of Reconciliation Statement in FORM 9C for 2018-19 is also optional for the taxpayers having aggregate turnover up to 5 crore rupees.

25. IIT, Jodhpur, NHAI sign pact

Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur and National Highway Authority of India have signed a pact to share their expertise for betterment of highway infrastructure.

As a part of this MoU, NHAI and IT Jodhpur will work together in various domains.

The MoU will also failitate undergraduate and postgraduate students of lIT Jodhpur to undertake fully paid internships in those
domains.

26. Tata Motors crosses a production milestone

Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle vertical has crossed 40 lakh cumulative production milestone, nearly three decades after it rolled out its first model in the segment – Tata Sierra SUV in 1991.

The company, which over the years has produced models like the Indica, Sierra, Sumo, Safari, had achieved the 10 lakh production mark for passenger vehicles in 2005-06 and 30 lakh milestone in 2015.

27. GS1 sets up a platform

GS1 India, a global standards organisation, has set up the National Industry Forum for Retail (NIFR).

It is a platform where consumer products companies and retailers will partner to bette their supply chain and distribution network.

The forum includes more than a dozen leading companies such as Amazon, Google, Nestle, Hindustan Unilever, etc.

28. Asia: Second region to exceed 10 million cases

Asia surpassed 10 million infections of the new coronavirus on 24 Oct 2020, the second-heaviest regional toll in the world.

Behind only Latin America, Asia accounts for about one-fourth of the global caseload of 42.1 million of the virus.

With over 163,000 deaths, the region accounts for some 14% of the global COVID-19 toll.

29. Europe: Second region to cross 250,000 deaths

Europe became the second region after Latin America to surpass 250,000 deaths on 24 Oct 2020, with record numbers of daily COVID-19 infections reported in the past two weeks.

Europe accounts for nearly 19% of global deaths and about 22% of global cases.

The United Kingdom leads Europe’s death toll with about 45,000 deaths, followed by Italy, Spain, France and RusSia

30. Second Brazilian company to produce Sputnik

A Brazilian pharmaceutical company União Quimica has signed an agreement with the Russian Direct Investrment Fund (RDIF) to produce Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19 starting in the second half of November.

It still must obtain approval from Brazil’s health regulator Anvisa.

This is the second agreement to produce the Russian vaccine in Brazil.

31. Lewis Hamilton as Ambassador of LG Signature

LG Electronics Inc, a major home appliance maker in South Korea, has named Formula One star Lewis Hamilton as a brand ambassador for its luxury line of premium products.

Hamilton will promote the LG Signature brand, which the company uses for its high-end products.

Hamilton, a six-time Formula One world champion, is considered one of the best racing drivers in the history of the sport.

32. Dr Jayanta Madhab passes away

Renowned economist from Assam, Dr Jayanta Madhab passed away in October 2020.

Dr Jayanta Madhab worked as the financial adviser to the Calcutta Metropolitan Development Corporation.

He served as the economic advisor to the Assam government from 2003-2009 during the tenure of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi. The economist served as a director at the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

33. Kati Bihu celebrated in Assam

Locals in Bongaigaon celebrated the Kati Bihu festival in Assam on 17 Oct 2020.

Kati Bihu marks an important day for the Assamese people as they celebrate it by lighting up their homes and agricultural fields.

People perform cultural dances and organise feasts.

On this day, earthen lamps are lit at the foot of the household, tulsi plants, the granary, and the paddy fields.

34. Stellapps launches ‘mooPay’

Digital technology solutions provider Stellapps has announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind, fully-automated direct payment platform ‘moo Pay’ for dairy farmers in Rajasthan.

It enables dairy officials to transfer milk payments digitally to member farmers from the dairies’ existing bank account to farmers’ savings bank account.

It acts as a payment gateway for dairies to make payments.

35. Kiren Rijiju attends Y20 Summit

Sports Minister Kiren Rijju attended the Youth-20 (Y20) Summit held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Summit kicked off on 15 Oct 2020 and concluded on October 17, 2020.

The theme of the Summit was ‘Government – Youth dialogue on post-COVID-19 opportunities! The Y20 Youth Summit is a youth-led event bringing young leaders from across G20 countries to discuss the G20 Leaders’ agenda.

36. ISA confers the ISA Solar Awards

The Solar Awards were presented during the third Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), for the first time.

The assembly witnessed the conferment of the Visvesvaraya award which recognises the countries with maximum floating solar capacity in each of the four regions of ISA.

The awards went to Japan for the Asia Pacific region and the Netherlands for Europe and other regions.

37. UP Governor launches Safe City Project

Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has inaugurated the ‘Safe City Project’

It is a 180-day-long campaign under which the police and other departments will work towards the safety of women.

The Governor flagged off 100 pink scooties and 10 four-wheeler police vehicles. Lucknow is among eight cities in the country selected for the ‘Safe City Project

38. International Chefs Day: 20 October

International Chefs Day is celebrated on October 20 every year. The day was created in 2004 to give respect to the profession.

Dr Bill Gallagher, a celebrated chef and also the former president of the World Association of Chefs Societies (World Chefs), created International Chefs Day in 2004.

The theme of International Chefs Day 2020 was ‘Healthy Food For the Future!
