1. Shrishti Goswami to be 1-day CM of Uttarakhand
Haridwar-based Shristi Goswami became the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand for one day on 24 January 2021, which is the National Girl Child Day. She is a student of B.Sc agriculture at a Roorkee-based institution. She has been the CM of Bal Vidhan Sabha (Children’s State Assembly) since 2018. She gave suggestions on three main points – safety of children and girls, checking drug usage among youngsters and stopping hill migration in the state.
2. Sri Lanka approves Oxford-AstraZeneca’ vaccine
Sri Lanka has approved the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use. It would be the first in Sri Lanka, while several other candidates are in the pipeline at the National Medicines Regulatory Authority. Minister for pharmaceutical production and regulation Channa Jayasumana announced it on 22 January 2021.
3. YEIDA starts awareness drive
The Yamuna Expressway industrial development authority (YEIDA), along with the traffic police, has started an awareness drive for commuters to reduce accidents on the Yamuna Expressway. The awareness drive is part of the ongoing road safety month that started on January 19 and will end on February 17, 2021. YEIDA organized an event for road safety at Jewar toll plaza.
4. Odisha CM lays foundation stone of NBT
On the occasion of the 125th birth ceremony of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik laid the foundation stone of the Netaji Bus Terminal in Bose’s birthplace Cuttack on 23 Jan 2021. The Inter-State Bus Terminal will be developed at a cost of around Rs 65 cr and will have a built-up area of 11,000 sq mt with 180 bus bays along with parking space for 274 vehicles in the ISBT.
5. US TV and radio host Larry King passes away
The American television and radio host Larry King passed away in January 2021. Larry King started his career as a local journalist in Florida in the 1950s and 1960s. He, however, gained prominence with the show ‘The Larry King Show’.
6. UP’s Republic Day tableau to showcase Ayodhya
The Uttar Pradesh tableau for 2021 Republic Day parade will showcase Ayodhya’s cultural heritage and include a model of the Ram temple being built in the ancient city. In the first part of the tableau, Maharishi Valmiki has been shown writing the Ramayana. In the middle part, Shri Ram Mandir, the epitome of Ayodhya’s cultural status linked with mass sentiments and devotion, has been shown.
7. FM launches Union Budget mobile app
FM Nirmala Sitharaman launched the ‘Union Budget mobile app’ for hassle-free access of Budget documents by MPs and the general public on 23 Jan 2021. Launched on the occasion of the customary ‘halwa’ ceremony, the app helps complete access to 14 Union Budget documents, including the annual financial statement, Demand for Grants (DG), finance bill and more as directed by the Constitution.
8. Quantum Advisors: Piyush Thakkar as CEO
Piyush Thakkar has been elevated to the position of CEO of Quantum Advisors. Piyush was serving as COO of Quantum Advisors. Quantum has also appointed Arvind Chari as Chief Investment Officer. Arvind was serving as Head – Fixed Income. Both the appointments have come in effect from Jan 1, 2021. I V Subramaniam will remain as the Managing Director on the Board.
9. RBI plans stricter norms for NBFCs
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proposed to tighten rules for major non-bank lenders. It has proposed to classify the non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) into four categories, depending on their systemic importance and the potential risk to the stability of the financial system. All NBFCs with assets of up to Rs. 1,000 crores will fall under the NBFC-Base Layer category.
10. Govt job for kin of Punjab farmers
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has announced that the state will provide a government job to one family member of the farmers who died during the protests against farm laws at Delhi borders. The total death toll during the farmer’s protest has reached 135. The eleventh round of talks between the protesting farmer’s unions and the central government ended on 22 Jan 2021.
11. Maharashtra govt to start jail tourism
The Maharashtra government will start ‘jail tourism in the state from Pune’s Yerawada prison on January 26, 2021. It will facilitate people to visit and see from close quarters the historical prisons. This is the first of its kind initiative in the country. Under the British rule, several freedom fighters, including Mahatma Gandhi had been imprisoned in Yerawada jail.
12. Morgan Stanley’s CEO is the top-paid
Morgan Stanley Chief Executive Officer James Gorman leaped past JPMorgan Chase & Co’s Jamie Dimon as the best-paid CEO of a major U.S. bank. Morgan Stanley boosted Gorman’s pay 22% to $33 million for 2020, when it posted its third consecutive year of record earnings. His pay includes $1.5 million in salary and a $7.88 million bonus.
13. Chinese military personnel to get hike
Personnel of the 2-million-strong Chinese military would get a 40 per cent pay hike from 2021. China has also revised its National Defence Law (NDL), expanding the power of the Central Military Commission (CMC). CMC is the overall high command of the Chinese military. The new law empowers the CMC to mobilise military and civilian resources in defence of national interests.
14. MCA amends CSR policy
The Corporate Affairs Ministry notified changes to the corporate social responsibility (CSR) rules on 22 Jan 21. This has been done to allow companies to undertake multi-year projects and to shift the focus on impact assessment from expenditure alone. Companies having a net worth of Rs 500 cr or more have to spend at least 2% of the average net profits made during the last 3 fiscals on CSR.
15. Tata Power Solar wins Rs 1,200 crore order
Tata Power Solar has bagged an order worth Rs 1,200 crore from NTPC for setting up of 320 MW ground-mounted solar project. Tata Power Solar is India’s largest integrated solar company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Power. The scope of work includes acquisition, engineering, procurement, installation, and commissioning of the grid-connected solar project on a turnkey basis.
16. Tata Motors introduces refrigerated trucks
Tata Motors has announced a new range of refrigerated trucks for smooth movement of the countrywide Covid-19 vaccination drive. The new trucks come equipped with specialised transportation equipment. The trucks aim to provide end-to-end transportation of the vaccine. These vaccine trucks and vans are available on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal for purchase.
17. Surya, Sarang to perform in Aero India Show
Indian Aerobatic team of Surya Kiran will perform along with Sarang aerobatic team for the first time in the 13th edition of Aero India show. The event will be held from Feb 3-5, 2021 in Bengaluru. The Chief of Air Staff Conclave will be held on the first two days. Besides, this is also for the first time an air show is being held during the COVID-19 pandemic, anywhere in the world.
18. Rare UV bright stars spotted
Astronomers, while exploring the massive globular cluster in the Galaxy called NGC 2808, have spotted rare hot UV-bright stars in it. These stars whose inner core is almost exposed, making them very hot, exist in the late stages of evolution of a Sun-like star. One of the UV-bright stars was found to be about 3000 times brighter than the Sun with a surface temperature of about 100,000 K.
19. ‘Shaft with Multiple Outlets’ by IIT Bombay
IIT Bombay has come up with ‘Shaft with Multiple Outlets’ as an intervention for improving the performance of existing piped water distribution networks. IIT Bombay and IIT Madras implemented the solution in the towns of Saphale, and Umerpada, in Palghar district, Maharashtra, which is currently provided with water from a multi village water supply system.
20. Spices Board conducted Buyer Seller Meet
The Spices Board conducted a virtual Buyer Seller Meet(BSM) on 22 Jan 2021. It was conducted to address the concerns of the small cardamom industry and to provide a common platform for the stakeholders to interact directly and establish effective business linkages. Kerala is the largest producer of small cardamom in the country, with Tamil Nadu and Karnataka being other producers.
