1. Rajesh Vaidya: AFMC’s new Dean

Air Vice-Marshal Rajesh Vaidya assumed the appointment of Dean and Deputy Commandant of Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, on 20 Feb 2021. An alumnus of AFMC from the 1981 batch, he was commissioned in Air Force in 1985. He had served as Medical Officer in both fighter and transport squadrons. He was awarded the Vishishta Seva Medal in 2019 and the Cheif of Air Staff Commendation in 2013.

2. ISS supply ship named after K. Johnson

An International Space Station (ISS) supply ship named after the Black NASA mathematician ‘SS Katherine Johnson’ was launched into orbit on 20 Feb’21. Northrop Grumman launched the 4-ton shipment for NASA from Virginia’s eastern shore. The launch coincided with the 59th anniversary of astronaut John Glenn’s historic launch, who became the first American to orbit Earth.

3. Youngest solo female to row the Atlantic Ocean

A 21-year-old swimming teacher, Jasmine Harrison from North Yorkshire in the UK has become the youngest woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She reached Antigua in the Caribbean after 70 days, three hours, and 48 minutes after covering 3,000 miles. The previous youngest female solo ocean rower was 22-year-old Katie Spotz from the USA who rowed the Atlantic east-to-west in 2010.

4. US President, Canadian PM to meet virtually

US President Joe Biden will hold his first bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on 23 February 2021. The meeting will review joint efforts in the areas of mutual interest such as COVID-19 response, climate change, and economic ties. It is Biden’s first one-on-one meeting with a foreign counterpart after assuming office.

5. UP govt to present 1st paperless budget

Yogi Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh government will present the first paperless budget 2021 in the Legislative Assembly on 22 February 2021. Uttar Pradesh will be the first state to table a paperless budget. All members of the state legislature have been provided ipads to view the budget highlights. This year’s budget is the fifth budget of the Adityanath government in the state.

6. Railways to electrify its operations in WB

Railways will be fully electrified in three years in West Bengal. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal informed this while dedicating various infrastructure development and passenger amenity-related works in the North Bengal area. The newly electrified section from New Jalpaiguri to New Coochbehar of 126 Route Kilometers was dedicated on 21 Feb 2021.

7. PM Narendra Modi visits Assam, West Bengal

PM Narendra Modi visited Assam and West Bengal on 22 Feb 2021. In Assam, he dedicated important projects of the oil and gas sector to the nation at Silapathar in the Dhemaji district. He also dedicated to the nation the INDMAX Unit at Indian Oil’s Bongaigaon Refinery. In West Bengal, he inaugurated several railway projects in Hooghly and the third line between Kalaikunda and Jhargram.

8. PM Narendra Modi to inaugurate an institute

PM Modi will inaugurate Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Institute of Medical Sciences and Research at IIT Kharagpur on 23 Feb 2021. He will also address the 66th Convocation of IIT Kharagpur. The super-specialty hospital has been set up by IIT Kharagpur with support from the Ministry of Education. It will focus on biomedical, clinical, and translational research, telemedicine, etc.

9. 88 railway projects dedicated to the nation

Railways Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated and dedicated a host of railway infrastructure projects and projects related to passenger amenities on 21 February 2021, through video conferencing. These were inaugurated at various railway stations in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka 88 railway projects were dedicated to the nation worth over Rs. 1000 crores.

10. Guru Ravidas Vishva Mahapeeth Adhiveshan

President Ram Nath Kovind addressed the “Shri Guru Ravidas Vishva Mahapeeth Rashtriya Adhiveshan-2021′ in New Delhi on 21 Feb 2021. Guru Ravidas was an Indian poet-saint of the Bhakti movement and the founder of the Ravidassia religion during the 15th to 16th century CE. Ravidas’s devotional verses were included in the Sikh scriptures known as Guru Granth Sahib.

11. Paddy procurement registers jump of 15.91%

In the current Kharif marketing season, the paddy procurement has registered a jump of 15.91 percent in comparison to the corresponding period in 2020. Till 20 Feb 2021, over 651 lakh Metric Tonnes of paddy have been purchased against 2020’s corresponding purchase of over 561 lakh Metric Tonnes. Out of the total purchase, Punjab alone has contributed over 202 lakh Metric Tonnes.

12. PM Modi to visit Puducherry on February 25

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Puducherry on the 25th of February 2021. He will attend a function at JIPMER- Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research. There, he will inaugurate the 490- crore rupee new campus at Karaikal and lay the foundation stone for a minor port in Puducherry for 18 crore rupees under the Sagarmala Project.

13. Emergency use authorization sought for Sputnik

Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories has initiated the process with the Drugs Controller General of India for emergency use authorization of vaccine candidate Sputnik V. Dr. Reddy’s partnered with the Russian Direct Investment Fund in September 2020 to conduct the clinical trials of the Sputnik V and for its distribution rights in India.

14. India sends COVID-19 vaccine to Mongolia

In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, India has sent 13 boxes of COVID-19 vaccine to Mongolia. The vaccine was sent from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai to Mongolia on 22 Feb 2021. 49 more countries will be supplied vaccines in the coming days, ranging from Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean to Africa, South-East Asia, and the Pacific Islands.

15. Novak Djokovic wins 9th Australian Open title

In Tennis, Novak Djokovic won his ninth Australian Open title, beating Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 in the final at Melbourne Park on 21 Feb 2021. The victory takes Djokovic’s grand slam singles tally to 18, just two behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. In men’s doubles, Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek won the title on 21 Feb 2021. This was their first Grand Slam as a team.

16. Puducherry CM tenders his resignation

Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy tendered his resignation on 22 Feb 2021 after failing to win the trust motion moved by him. He was appointed as the CM in the year 2016. His cabinet colleagues and other members and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) members also handed over their resignation letter to the Lt. Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan.

17. 2nd phase of Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav

Union Minister of State for Culture and Tourism, Prahlad Singh Patel inaugurated the second phase of Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav on 22 Feb 21 at Raj Bhawan in Darjeeling. It is a 3-day event being held from 22-24 Feb 2021. A choreographic presentation by Odissi Vision and Movement Centre marked the beginning of the event. On the 2nd day, Sounak Chattopadhyay will recite Rabindra Sangeet.

18. Karnataka to host second Khelo India Games

Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has announced that the 2nd Khelo India University Games will be hosted by Karnataka. It will be held in partnership with the Association of Indian Universities. Over 4,000 sportsmen under the age of 25 will compete. The 1st edition was held in Bhubaneswar in 2020. In the 2nd edition of the games, Yogasana and Mallakhamb have also been added.

19. 7-day long exhibition of NSSH scheme concluded

In Jammu and Kashmir, a seven-day long exhibition of the National Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Hub (NSSH) scheme concluded on 21 Feb 2021 at ITI, Ground in Rajouri. During the week-long exhibition, different stalls were erected by the entrepreneurs displaying various products like cooking implements. Different departments like Animal and Sheep Husbandry also displayed their products.

20. Ladakh Winter Carnival held

In Kargil, various programmes were organized on 21 Feb 2021, in connection with the Ladakh Winter Carnival, 2021 which is going on simultaneously in both Leh and Kargil districts. The event started with an ice hockey match at the world’s coldest inhabited place, Drass, and a snow walk at the famous Dropati Kund Matayen. Executive Councillor for Tourism Phunsok Tashi was the Chief Guest.

21. KP Krishnan: Chairman of Shriram Capital board

Shriram Capital Ltd (SCL) has appointed K.P. Krishnan as the new chairman on the board of the company. SCL is the holding company for financial services and insurance entities of the Shriram Group. Krishnan has served as special and Additional Secretary with the Department of Land Resources and also in the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (2010-2012).

22. Jewar Airport to be developed as the biggest

Uttar Pradesh govt plans to develop Jewar Airport as Asia’s biggest airport. The state govt has proposed to set aside Rs. 2,000 crores for Jewar Airport. This was announced by Finance Minister Suresh Khanna while presenting Rs. 5,50,270.78 crore budget for 2021-22 in the State Assembly. The state govt has also increased the number of runways of the Jewar Aiport to six, from two proposed earlier.

23. Jio: Largest telecom operator in Gujarat

In less than four-and-a-half years, Jio has climbed to the top position with maximum subscribers in Gujarat. As per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Jio added 3.36 lakh mobile numbers in Gujarat and became the largest telecom operator of the circle with a total base of 2.54 crore subscribers. Vodafone Idea lost about 1.62 lakh subscribers and settled at the second position.

24. Mindtree achieves Google specialization

Technology services company Mindtree has achieved the Application Development Partner Specialization in the Google Cloud Partner Advantage Program. Mindtree is a premier Google Cloud partner, offering clients a complete spectrum of cloud services, including big data services, migration, and transformation, implementing SAP, data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning services.

25. UP to export Buddha rice to Singapore

Uttar Pradesh is set to send a consignment of 20 tonnes of Buddha Rice, popularly known as “Kala Namak” rice, to Singapore soon. It is one of the finest varieties of aromatic rice in India. The consignment will be sent to Singapore by the end of March 2021. A Kala Namak Rice festival on the pattern of Strawberry Festival will also be held in the state in near future.
