1. Police Commemoration Day: 21 October
The Police Commemoration Day is observed on 21 October every year. The day remembers and honours the brave policemen who have laid down their lives in the line of duty.
The day traces its history back to 21 October 1959, when 20 Indian soldiers were attacked by Chinese troops in Ladakh.
Due to the altercation between the troops, 10 Indian policemen lost their lives and 7 were imprisoned.
2. National Symposium on 22 & 23 Oct 2020
A National Symposium & Exhibition on “MEMORIES OF 22 OCTOBER 1947” is being organised by the National Museum Institute of History of Art, Conservation & Museology(NMI).
It will be held in Srinagar, Kashmir on 22 and 23 Oct 2020. Lt. Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Manoj Sinha will be the Chief Guest of the programme. Pakistan invaded Kashmir; On 22 October 1947.
3. Dhoni: 1st cricketer to play 200 IPL matches
MS Dhoni has become the first player in the history of Indian Premier League to have played 200 matches.
Chennai Super Kings’ match against Rajasthan Royals on 19 Oct 2020 marked the individual record for the skipper.
In 200 matches, the former India captain has scored 4596 runs, which includes 23 fifties, with the highest score of 84 not out. His strike-rate reads 36.
4. Asia Power Index 2020: India at 4th place
India was ranked 4th in the Sydney-based Lowy Institute’s Asia Power Index for 2020. According to the study, the US tops the most powerful country influencing the Asia-Pacific, while China stayed firmly in second place for the third year.
Japan remained to be in the third spot, while India managed to secure the fourth position on the list.
5. R Narayan: President of FICCI-CMSME
R Narayan, Founder and CEO, Power2SME has been elected as President of Confederation of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (CMSME).
CMSME is an affiliated body under the umbrella of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
He took over from outgoing President Sanjay Bhatia at the sixth annual general meeting of FICCI-CMSME.
6. SBI announces up to 25 bps concession
SBI has announced concession in home loan rates by as high as 25 bps. With this, SBI home loan customers would get an interest concession of 25 bps for buying their dream homes of above 75 lakh based on CIBIL score and through Yono.
The same concession would also be applicable for home loan customers for a loan amount of up to 3 crores in eight metro cities.
7. India receives highest ever FDI
In April-August 2020, India received the highest ever total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for the first five months of a financial year.
The total FDI inflow into India in the first five months was $35.73 billion, 13% higher than that in the same period last fiscal.
FDI equity inflow received during FY21 (April to August 2020) is $27.1 billion.
8. FDI rises to over 358 billion during 2014-20
The total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflow grew by 55% from $231.37 bn in 2008 to 2014 to over $358 bn from 2014 to 2020.
FDI equity inflow also increased by 57% from around 160 bn dollars during 2008-14 to over 252 billion dollars in 2014-2020.
During April to August 2020, total FDI inflow of 35.73 billion is received. It is the highest ever for the first 5 months of a financial year
9. Punjab: 1st to reject Centre’s farm laws
Punjab has become the 1st state to pass a resolution rejecting the recent farm laws brought by the Centre and passed 4 Bills to counter the central laws.
These are The Farmers’ Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020; The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce Bill, 2020, The Essential Commodities Bill, 2020 along with a bill on Amendment to the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908.
10. SANT Missile successfully testfired
India successfully test-fired the Stand-off Anti-tank (SANT) Missile off the coast of Odisha on 19 October 2020.
The Missile is developed by the DRDO for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and will have both Lock-on After Launch and Lock-on Before Launch capability.
It is, reportedly, an upgrade on India’s Helina missile believed to have a range of 7 to 8km. It has a range between 15 and 20 km.
11. UP govt expands Ayushman Bharat scheme
Uttar Pradesh govt is expanding the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana Ayushman Bharat in
This step will include half of the state’s population under the health cover scheme of Ayushman Bharat.
Currently, under the Scheme, the beneficiary is selected on the basis of social, economic, ethnic census-2011. On this basis, 1.18 crore families of the state are eligible for the scheme.
12. Maharashtra: 1st state to cap prices of masks
Maharashtra has become the first state in the country to cap the prices of masks. N95 masks will now be available at Rs 19 to Rs 49, while two-layer and three-layer masks will be available for Rs 3 to 4.
This maximum selling price limit will be applicable to all mask manufacturing companies/distributors/retailers in the state.
13. Atma-Nirbhar Bharat Training Center in MP
An Atma-Nirbhar Bharat Training Center has been started in Madhya Pradesh. Training in handicrafts, arts and culture-based skills will be imparted through this centre to the women.
The Atma-Nirbhar Bharat Training Center has been established in Indore, the financial capital of the state. The centre, operating through Lok Sanskriti Manch, was inaugurated on 20 October 2020.
14. Super Speciality cancer hospital in Lucknow
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has inaugurated the Super Speciality cancer hospital in Lucknow. The Super Speciality cancer hospital established with a cost of 805 crores rupees will run on the lines of TATA Cancer Institute Mumbai.
The hospital spread in 77 acres will be a leading cancer institute in the country which will have 30 bedded IPD, OPD, daycare services and other facilities.
15. Air quality in Delhi in very poor category
Delhi’s pollution level worsened with the air quality falling to the lower end of the very poor category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 268 on 21 Oct 2020, while on 20 Oct it was 223.
An AQI between 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe!
16. Shaoxing to offer experimental COVID vaccine
Shaoxing, a city in China’s Zhejiang province will offer experimental COVID vaccines to its residents.
Residents aged between 18 and 59 in the city of Shaoxing, who are not in priority groups, can apply online for inoculation.
Shaoxing residents that choose to be inoculated will need to give reasons for wanting the vaccine on their applications and will be charged 400 yuan for 2 doses.
17. Motherson acquires assets of Bombardier
Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd has acquired the electrical wiring interconnection systems business of Bombardier Transportation in Mexico.
The acquisition is expected to strengthen Motherson’s rolling stock component manufacturing business in the railway sector in the American continent.
In 2019, it had acquired Bombardier’s rolling stock electrical component and systems business in the UK.
18. Reduction in ‘Soil-Transmitted Helminthiases’
14 States have reported a reduction in the prevalence of parasitic intestinal worm infection also known as Soil-Transmitted Helminthiases (STH).
9 of these states have shown a substantial reduction in worm prevalence in the STH follow up prevalence survey.
Soil-Transmitted Helminthiases is known to have detrimental effects on children’s physical growth and well being and can cause anaemia.
19. Tectonic faultline in Ladakh moving northward
In Ladakh, recent studies have found that the tectonic faultline is moving northward.
Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology noted that the fault line is tectonically active along the Indus Suture Zone (ISZ).
Studies observed that the sedimentary rocks of Indus are overriding the Ladakh batholith granite.
This confirms that the Indus suture zone around Leh is seismologically active.
20. J&K UT govt constitutes Committees
In J&K, the Govt has constituted an Apex level and two Divisional Committees. The Terms of Reference of the Apex committee will be to draw a road map and detailed schedule for conduct of Elections on the basis of inputs from the Divisional Committees.
The Divisional Committees will have respective Divisional Commissioner as Chairman, IG Police as member, and Director RDD as Member-Secretary.
21. India, Vietnam Business Forum held virtually
The India Vietnam Business Forum was organised virtually on 20 Oct 2020. Trade between India and Vietnam has grown steadily and presently stands at 12.34 billion dollars in 2019-20.
The export basket from India to Vietnam includes bovine meat, fishery products, steel, pharmaceuticals, etc. while imports from Vietnam include mobile phones, electrical machinery and equipment, computers, etc.
22. Jio, Qualcomm successfully test 5g in India
Jio and Qualcomm have announced that they were working together to develop indigenous 5G solutions and network infrastructure for India.
Qualcomm and Jio also announced that
they achieved over a 1 Gbps milestone on the Reliance Jio 5GNR solution and the Qualcomm 5G RAN Platform.
Currently, the USA, South Korea, Australia, Switzerland and Germany can offer 1GBPS speeds to 5G customers.
23. DRDO Procurement Manual-2020 approved
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved a new DRDO Procurement Manual-2020. This will encourage more participation of the Indian Industry including start-ups and MSMEs in R&D activity and achieve the goal of self-reliance in Defence.
It will facilitate the indigenous Defence Industry by simplifying the processes and ensuring their participation in design and development activities.
24. 18th meeting of Prosecutors General of SCO
India on 20 Oct 2020, participated in 18th meeting of Prosecutors General of SCO via
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta represented India. The meeting of Prosecutors agreed to strengthen cooperation in preventing and combating corruption, mutual legal assistance and exchange of regulatory legal acts.
India will host the next meeting of Prosecutors General in 2021.
25. UAE delegation reaches Israel for first time
In a historic first visit by a Gulf Arab nation, a United Arab Emirates delegation reached Israel on 20 Oct 2020.
It was accompanied by top US officials to cement the normalisation of ties between the two nations.
As part of the US-brokered deal, four agreements were signed relating to investment, scientific cooperation, civil aviation and visa exemptions, during the visit.
26. Trial run of H-CNG buses begin in Delhi
The trial run of Hydrogen-blended CNG (H-CNG) powered city buses was launched in Delhi.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the trial run on 20th Oct.
India promotes Hydrogen as a clean fuel for the mobility sector, Hydrogen-blended CNG (H-CNG) is emerging as an excellent interim technology for achieving emissions reduction and import substitution.
27. Framework for District development plans
Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has unveiled preparation framework for Block and District development plans.
This framework is a step-by-step guide for Block and District Panchayats to formulate plans. The framework will serve as an important tool for all resource persons, stakeholders associated with decentralized planning in block and district panchayats.
28. TV Actress Zarina Roshan Khan passes away
Veteran actor Zarina Roshan Khan passed away in October 2020. She was popularly known as Indu Suri or Indu Daasi from Zee TV’s popular show Kumkum Bhagya.
The actor had also performed in serials like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and played the role of a mother in several Hindi films. She started her career as a stunt woman.
29. Indigenous software solution for VTS
Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has e-launched an indigenous software solution for Vessel traffic services (VTS) and Vessels Traffic Monitoring Systems (VTMS).
Presently, India has approximately 15 VTS systems operational along the Indian Coast.
VTS and VTMS is a software which determines vessel positions, position of other traffic or meteorological hazard warnings, etc.
30. Verizon signs up Microsoft, Nokia
Verizon has struck deals with Microsoft and Nokia. It will improve their ability to target business customer by offering clients the ability to automate factory floors, lower costs and speed up data traffic through private 5G networks.
Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing business, will run on top of Verizon’s 5G network to process the data generated by machines at the local facility.
31. Sweden bans Huawei, ZTE
Sweden has banned the use of telecom equipment from China’s Huawei and ZTE in its 5G network on security grounds, joining other European nations that have restricted the role of Chinese suppliers.
This has been done ahead of a spectrum auction scheduled for Nov 2020. The United Kingdom in July 2020 ordered Huawei equipment to be purged completely from Britain’s 5G network by 2027.
32. Microsoft partners with SpaceX
Microsoft took a big step towards strengthening the capabilities of its Azure cloud computing platform.
The company announced that it is partnering with Elon Musk-led SpaceX to provide satellite-powered internet connectivity on Azure.
Plan to deliver satellite connectivity between field-deployed assets and cloud resources across the globe to both the public and private sector.
33. IRDAI sets up panel for cyber insurance
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) has set up a panel to explore the possibility of a basic standard product structure to provide insurance cover for individuals and establishments to manage their cyber risks.
IRDAI noted that amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there are rising incidences of cyberattacks and a growing number of high-profile data breaches.
34. ‘My Town My Pride’ programme launched
After the ‘Back To Village-3’ campaign, the ‘My Town My Pride’ programme has been launched in Udhampur by the Jammu and Kashmir administration.
It is aimed at delivering services to the urban population at their doorstep.
The main objectives of the campaign are–public outreach in towns, strengthening grassroots democracy and service delivery at doorsteps, on-spot grievance redressal, etc.
35. Zenpay, RBL Bank join hands
Zenpay Solutions has announced its partnership with RBL bank to drive financial inclusion to issue salary cards to its customers across India.
The corporate expense and salary payment . solution will help blue collared employees working with SMEs and MSME to receive digital payments via a salary account.
Zenpay will also offer customers a digital salary card and mobile application.
36. Siemens Healthineers to invest 1,300 crore
Siemens Healthineers will invest 31,300 crore over the next 5 years to set up an innovation hub in Bengaluru.
The investment is part of Siemens Healthineers’ global strategy for 2025, wherein India plays an important role as a growth market for the company.
The innovation hub will be housed in a new campus that will combine R&D and manufacturing to make India a centre of competence.
37. Sudan to be removed from a list
President Donald Trump intends to lift Sudan’s state sponsor of terrorism designation.
Once the $335 million that Sudan has agreed to pay as part of a settlement for victims of twin bombings against the US Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya in 1998, he will lift the designation.
The announcement comes months after the US and Sudan reached a bilateral settlement agreement.
38. Telangana joins hands with BSE, GlobalLinker
The Govt of Telangana along with GlobalLinker has signed an MoU with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). It will address the challenge of access to finance to the MSMEs.
BSE will provide intellectual and manpower support to create awareness about the importance and benefits of listing on stock exchanges.
Through this, MSMEs of the State can have access to equity financing opportunities.
39. Wipro secures five-year contract from Fortum
Wipro Ltd has won a five-year application management (AMS) and services integration & management (SIAM) contract from Fortum. Fortum is a Finland-based clean-energy company.
As a part of the agreement, Wipro will manage Fortum’s application portfolio across hundreds of applications for more than 11,500 users across 18 countries and provide 24/7support for business-critical applications.
40. Blue Origin launches its suborbital rocket
Blue Origin launched its New Shepard suborbital rocket into the skies over west Texas, recently. The flight was the 13th time a version of the New Shepard flew into space.
The New Shepard contained several technology experiments, including a lunar landing system that contained a lidar suite, a computer and a terrain recognition system as well as a heat shield.
