1. International Equal Pay Day: 18 Sept 2020
Under an initiative of the United Nations, 18 Sept 2020 was observed as the first-ever International Equal Pay Day.
The aim was to highlight the importance of ending sexual discrimination in relation to the gender pay gap.
In India, women earn 19 per cent less than men, according to a survey conducted by Monster Salary Index.
2. World Water Monitoring Day: September 18
World Water Monitoring Day is celebrated on September 18 every year.
The Day was established in 2003 by America’s Clean Water Foundation as a global educational outreach program.
It aims to build public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by empowering citizens to carry out basic monitoring of their local water bodies.
3. Chef Vikas Khanna to be honoured
Michelin-star chef Vikas Khanna will be honoured with the prestigious 2020 Asia Game Changer Award.
He will be awarded for feeding millions across India amid the COVID-19 pandemic through a massive food distribution drive that he coordinated from thousands of miles away in his Manhattan home.
Khanna is the only Indian among the six honourees named by the leading organisation.
4. ICICI Home Finance launches a scheme
ICICI Home Finance has launched a new loan scheme ‘Apna Ghar Dreams, with credit amount in the range of Rs 2 lakh to 50 lakh, for skilled workers employed in the informal sector in Delhi.
The scheme is meant for skilled workers such as carpenters, plumbers, etc.
The customers should have a minimum account balance of Rs 1,500 for a loan up to 5 lakh and Rs 3,000 for loan above 5 lakh.
5. 13th IPL kick-starts in Abu Dhabi
13th edition of the Indian Premier League began at Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on 19 Sept 2020.
Mumbai Indians will take on Chennai Super Kings in the opening match of the IPL.
The tournament, which has been shifted to the UAE due to COVID-19 pandemic, is a TV-only event.
In all, 60 matches will be held in three avenues- Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai.
6. Rajya Sabha passes two bills
The Rajya Sabha has passed the Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Bill, 2020 and the Indian Medicine Central Council (Amendment) Bill, 2020.
Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Bill amends the Homoeopathy Central Council Act, 1973.
The Indian Medicine Central Council (Amendment) Bill amends the Indian Medicine Central Council Act, 1970.
7. IFC to provide two trillion dollars to India
The International Finance Corporation has said that two trillion dollars will be provided to India to develop green buildings, improve public transport and to expand renewable sources of energy
This was announced at the “e-DIALOGUE on
Ease of Living and Sustainable Development Goals-2020-21” held in Mumbai.
IFC’s Country Head Jun Zhang made the announcement.
8. Centre increases FDI limit in defence to 74%
The Central govt has increased the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit in the defence sector from 49 to 74% under automatic route and beyond 74 per cent through the government route.
This will enhance Ease of Doing Business and contribute to growth of investment, income and employment.
Foreign investments in the defence sector will be subject to scrutiny on grounds of national security.
9. Queen Elizabeth II to be removed by Barbados
Queen Elizabeth II, who is the head of state in the UK and 15 Commonwealth realms, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand, will be dropped as monarch by Barbados in 2021.
Before it celebrates its 55th independence anniversary from British in November 2021, Barbados will sever ties.
It will become the first country in almost three decades to sever ties with the British royal family.
10. Amazon India makes all-women delivery station
E-commerce major Amazon India has set up an all-women delivery station in Kadi, Gujarat – its second such facility in the country.
The new all-women delivery station is part of the company’s efforts towards increasing participation of women in the workforce.
In 2016, the company had launched its first all-women delivery station in India, with its partner in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
