1. India: Vice-Chair of OECD Working Group on GLP
India has been designated the ‘Vice-Chair’ of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) Working Group of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), recognising the contribution of the Indian GLP programme.
GLP is a quality system, which has been evolved by OECD to ensure that safety data generated on various chemicals can be relied upon by regulatory authorities.
2. Aishwarya Sridhar wins an award in photography
Aishwarya Sridhar became the first Indian to win the Wildlife Photographer of the Year award.
The announcement was made on October 13, 2020, at the Natural History Museum in London.
Aishwarya Sridhar photo won among 50,000 entries from over 80 countries across the world.
The image is named ‘Lights of passion and was captured using one of Canon’s premium DSLRS EOS-1DX Mark II.
3. 7 States, 2 UTs selected for an upgradation
The Sports Ministry has decided to upgrade centres from a total of 9 States and Union Territories to the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE) under the Khelo India scheme.
The States and UTs include Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Goa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Puducherry, Tripura and Jammu & Kashmir. The KISCEs will have world-class facilities.
3. IKEA partners Mastercard, Citi
Citibank India (Citi) and Mastercard have jointly announced the launch of “IKEA Family Credit Card by Citi”.
This will make shopping at IKEA more affordable, convenient and rewarding.
The card provides instant in-store card bookings, direct payments via Bharat QR, accelerated reward points and attractive EMIS and would also offer reward points on all purchases.
4. ‘JASHN-e-HARUD’ inaugurated
In Jammu and Kashmir, Adviser to Lieutenant Governor Baseer Ahmad Khan inaugurated two-day folk and light music concert JASHN-E-HARUD’ at Srinagar on 15 Oct 2020.
The musical concert was organised by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages Kashmir.
The concert witnessed a performance from the renowned artists of Kashmir enthralling the audience.
5. India Conducts Trial of Prithvi-2
A night trial of nuclear-capable missile Prithvi-2 successfully conducted from a test range in Odisha.
The Prithvi-2 missile is capable like carrying 500-1,000 kg of warheads and is powered by liquid propulsion twin engines.
The nine-metre tall ‘Prithvi’ was the first missile to have been developed by DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP).
6. Veteran Pradip Ghosh passes away
Bengali elocutionist Pradip Ghosh passes away in Kolkata at the age of 78, his swab samples test Covid-19 positive.
He has worked as a joint director in the state information and cultural affairs department.
The state government in 2017 awarded Ghosh with the ” Kazi Sabyasachi award” for his contribution to the field of performing art.
7. New species of fish discoverd in Western Ghat
Schistura hiranyakeshi a freshwater loach has been discoverd from Maharashtra’s western Ghat, the meaning of Hiranyakeshi in Sanskrit is golden hair.
The fish was named as “Schistura hiranyakeshi” after the river Hiranyakeshi which originates in the Sindhudurg Maharashtra.
Tejas Thackeray, Jayasimhan Praveen Raj and Shankar Balasubramanian discovered the species.
8. Dr Reddy’s gets green signal to conduct trial
Dr Reddy’s and RDIF entered into a partnership to conduct clinical trials of Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine and its distribution in India.
Drug Control General of India (DCGI) approved clinical trial in India. On August 11, 2020, the Sputnik V vaccine developed by the Gamaleya National Research Institute of Epidemiology. RDIF will supply 100 million doses of the vaccine to Dr Reddy.
9. J&K L-G announces ‘My Town My Pride’ programme
J&K Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha has reviewed the preparedness for the upcoming “My Town My Pride” initiative for the Municipal areas.
The two-day long programme will be held in Urban Local Bodies on 19th – 20th October 2020, during which camps for public service delivery would be set up.
“My Town My Pride” is on the lines of successfully concluded ‘Back to Village programme.
10. Innovation & Incubation Center in Jodhpur
Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ has inaugurated two facilities in Jodhpur.
These are- Innovation & Incubation Center and Sports Complex in the Permanent Campus of IIT Jodhpur.
Sports Facility comprises of all important sports facilities such as Cricket, Football, Hockey, Basketball, Tennis Court, Athletics Track, Volley ball, Yoga Ground, etc.
11. Jharkhand to give poor dhoti, saree at Rs 10
The Jharkhand govt will give dhotis or lungis, and sarees to all families in the state living below the poverty line twice a year.
All eligible households covered by the National Food Security Act and those eligible under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana will be given the clothes at an interval of 6 months.
The clothes will be distributed at a subsidised rate of Rs 10 per lungi/dhoti/saree.
12. J&K to host SIAA Congress in 2021
J&K has won the bid to host the 50th annual Skal International Asia Area (SIAA) Congress in 2021.
Skål International is an organisation of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship.
The Congress is likely to be held between April 8 and 11, 2021 at Srinagar’s Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC).
13. New Zealand passport most powerful
New Zealand has knocked off Japan for the strongest passport in the world according to the latest Global Passport Index. The index has been compiled by global financial advisory firm Arton Capital.
The US passport ranked 21 and India, 58. The passport index lists the power of passports in terms of real-time, visa restrictions, factoring in legislative changes, and entry requirements.
14. BharatPe launches brand campaign
BharatPe has announced the launch of its high impact TV campaign starring ‘Team Bharatpe’ with 11 Cricket stars.
The TVC series has been directed by Puneet Malhotra, and communicates the message ‘Hum Hai Team BharatPe – Jo Desh Ke Har Dukandaar Ke Saath Hai Khade!

15. Amazon Pay, Uber collaborate
Amazon Pay and Uber have announced a partnership that will integrate Amazon Pay as a payment option on the Uber app.
This partnership aims at enabling millions of customers to make contactless, safe, and secure payments for their Uber rides.
The partnership will bring contactless payments to more Indians by ensuring social distancing measures.
16. Prince William launches £50m Earthshot Prize
Prince William has launched the Earthshot Prize, which offers £50m in funding for solutions to the environmental and climate crises.
The aim of the prize is to provide an incentive to find solutions to repair the planet over the next decade.
The prize aims to improve living standards globally and find environmental solutions that work on every level through new ways of thinking.
17. Author Kairavi Bharat Ram’s new book
Author Kairavi Bharat Ram has written a children’s book about depression, especially among younger children.
The book is titled, ‘C is for Cat, D is for Depression’ weaves in stories of despair along with stories of courage and grit.
The book describes depression using metaphors, colours and textures and shows that there is always a little bit of hope waiting for around the corner.
18. India, Netherlands collaborate
India and the Netherlands have discussed a joint thrust in the e-health sector with the purpose of providing digital health facilities and security to Indians.
It will also help the Netherlands accelerate the digital transformation of health.
Part of National Digital Health Mission, this collaboration will see the two countries work closely to put in place the requisite technology backbone.

20. CRPF collaborates with IIT Delhi
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has collaborated with IIT Delhi, DRDO, and Joint Advanced Technology Centre (JATC) — DRDO and IIT Delhi joint initiative.
It will augment its Research and Development capabilities through this. An MOU was signed between CRPF and the two premier institutions in this regard.
21. Rajnath Singh presents Raksha Mantri Trophy
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on 16 Oct 2020, presented the Raksha Mantri Trophy for the Best and Second Best Command Hospitals of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) for the year 2019.
Command Hospital (Air Force) Bengaluru and Command Hospital (Eastern Command) Kolkata were judged as the Best and Second Best Command Hospital for the year 2019 respectively.
22. SCALE India App launched
