1. “Bharat Ke Mahaveer” Documentary Series on COVID-19 heroes

Dia Mirza and Sonu Sood will co-host the documentary series Bharat Ke Mahaveer to celebrate the country’s selfless heroes of COVID-19 pandemic.

The series is a joint initiative between the
United Nations in India and NITI Aayog, in partnership with Discovery Channel.

The three-part show will showcase 12 stories of unsung heroes who displayed “strength and solidarity” amid the pandemic.

2. Kapil Deo Kamat dies of COVID-19

Bihar Panchayati Raj Minister Kapil Deo Kamat succumbed to COVID-19 in October 2020.

Kamat is the second minister in Nitish Kumar”s cabinet to succumb to the infection this week.

Minister of backward classes and extremely backward class welfare Vinod Singh died in Delhi on October 12 due to post-COVID complications.

3. RBI to conduct first-ever OMO purchase of SDLS

The RBI will conduct its first-ever Open Market Operation (OMO) purchase of State Developments Loans (SDLs) on 22 October 2020.

The OMOs worth Rs 10,000 crore will be
conducted as a special case during the current financial year with an aim to improve liquidity and facilitate efficient pricing.

The RBI will purchase the SDLs through a multi-security auction using the multiple price method.

4. Day for the Eradication of Poverty: 17 October

The United Nations’ (UN) International Day
for the Eradication of Poverty is observed on October 17 each year since 1993,

It promotes people’s awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution worldwide, particularly in developing countries.

The theme for the year 2020 is: Acting together to achieve social and environmental justice for all.

5. India’s first helpline for founders

6. Supreme Court appoints Madan B Lokur

The Supreme Court has appointed former justice Madan B Lokur to monitor steps taken to prevent stubble burning in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh amid rising levels of pollution in the national capital and adjoining regions.

The order was passed by an apex court bench headed by Justice SA Bobde while hearing a PIL filed by 2 environmental activities seeking complete ban on stubble burning.

7. Rajkiran Rai is the new chairman of IBA

Union Bank of India’s MD and CEO Rajkiran Rai G has been elected as the chairman of Indian Banks’ Association. The managing committee of IBA at its meeting held on October 16, 2020, elected Rajkiran Rai G, MD and CEO, Union Bank of India as the chairman, IBA for the term 2020-21.

SBI’s Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara has been elected as the deputy chairman of the association.

8. LPG cylinder home delivery rules to change

From Nov 2020 the home delivery system of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder is going to see a major change.

Consumers who book an LPG cylinder will now need a one-time password (OTP) to be delivered at the doorstep.

Oil companies are implementing a new system which will be known as Delivery Authentication Code. It will help in preventing theft and also identifying the right customer.

9. IRCTC Tejas Express resumes

Indian Railways’ first corporate trains, the
Lucknow-New Delhi and Ahmedabad-Mumbai services started from 17 Oct 2020 after the services were suspended on 19 March.

The two Tejas Express services are the first set of trains run by a corporate entity, IRCTC, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways.

An SOP observing COVID-19 protocol has been issued to ensure the safety of the passengers.

10. NTPC CMD Gurdeep Singh term extended

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has extended the tenure of NTPC Ltd CMD Gurdeep Singh till 31 July 2025.

This will make him one of the longest-serving chiefs at India’s largest power generation utility. His second term will start from 4 February 2021.

Singh, a mechanical engineer by training had first assumed the charge of utility’s chairman and managing director in Feb 2016.

11. GreenBase, Tamil Nadu sign MoU

GreenBase has signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu govt to set up an industrial and logistics park near here at an investment of Rs 750 crore.

The proposed park, about 45 kms from the city, envisages development of 2.8 million square feet of built-up area for companies planning to set up manufacturing and logistics units. It will be built at Vadakkupattu, Oragadam.

12. Micromax to launch 1st smartphone after 2 yrs

Micromax has announced its return to India’s smartphone market. The company has been out of the market for over two years now, having failed to battle against Chinese smartphone companies.

The company will not make low-cost smartphones anymore. Micromax plans to make phones in the 37,000 -10,000 to 32000025000 segment and will sell both online and offline from early November 2020.

13. Vice Chief of Army Staff to visit US

Lieutenant General S. K. Saini, Vice Chief of the Army Staff will visit the United States of America from 17th to 20th Oct 2020.

The aim of the visit is to enhance military cooperation between both the Armies.

Lt. Gen. Saini will visit the US Army Pacific Command (USARPAC), the Army component of Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) and exchange ideas extensively with the military leadership.

14. Tata Motors ties up with HDFC Bank

Tata Motors has collaborated with HDFC Bank for financing its passenger vehicles.

Through the partnership, the company has introduced two new schemes — ‘Gradual Step Up Scheme’ and ‘TML Flexi Drive Scheme’ with an eye on making its products more accessible and driving up sales in the festive season. The schemes will be available till the end of November 2020.

15. Umar Gul announces retirement

Pakistan’s Umar Gul has announced that he will retire from all forms of cricket after the end of the ongoing National T20 Cup.

The 36-year-old Gul, who played his last match for Pakistan — an ODI — in 2016, featured for Balochistan team in the National T20 Cup, which ends on 18 Oct 2020.

From 47 Test matches, Gul took 163 wickets at an average of 34.06.

16. 102nd meeting of World Bank

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman participated in 102nd meeting of the World Bank Development Committee Plenary on 16 Oct 20.

She shared that the Govt has announced the first stimulus of 23 billion dollar to provide direct cash transfers and food security measures to the poor.

She also mentioned that the Government has committed 2.03 Billion dollar for strengthening health infrastructure.

17. 300-bedded hospital at Balarampur

UP CM Yogi Adityanath laid the foundation of a 300 bedded hospital under the establishment of King George Medical University at Balarampur on 16 October 2020.

He also laid the foundation stone of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Satellite Centre of King George Medical University.

For the first time in UP, a satellite centre of a medical institution is being established in another district.

18. UP govt to launch programme ‘Mission Shakti’

UP government launched 6-month long women empowerment programme ‘Mission Shakti’ to raise awareness and tackle crime against women in the state on 17 October 2020.

Governor Anandiben Patel launched the campaign in Lucknow while Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath kick-started it in Balrampur.

This 6 months-long campaign has two phases, Mission Shakti’ and ‘Operation Shakti.

19. EC appoints MK Das as Special Police Observer

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed retired IPS officer Mrinal Kanti Das as Special Police Observer.

He has been appointed for the upcoming by-elections to the Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh.

He had earlier been deputed in the same capacity for Tripura and Mizoram during the 2019 Lok Sabha Election and the Jharkhand Assembly elections of 2019.

20. Concessional rate on cargo movement

Government has extended the current concessional rate of 40% discount on cargo movement between India and Chabahar Port in Iran for a period of one year.

The discount will apply for the coastal
movement of cargo and vessel-related charges, being handled at Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Deendayal Port to Shahid Beheshti Port, Chabahar.

21. Putin proposes to extend a treaty

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed that Moscow and Washington extend their New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) that expires in Feb 2021.

He proposed to extend the accord for at least a year without imposing any conditions. The New START was signed in 2010. It limits the numbers of strategic nuclear warheads, missiles and bombers that Russia and the US can deploy.

22. India, Chile held joint commission meeting

India and Chile held their first joint commission meeting on 16 October 2020.

The meeting held virtually was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chilean counterpart Andres Allamand Zavala.

India welcomed Chile’s decision to designate India as a priority country in its foreign policy. Chile will also be opening its Consulate General in Mumbai.

23. India – International Food & Agri Week

Food Processing Industries Minister Narendra Singh Tomar virtually inaugurated the India International Food and Agri Week on 16 October 2020.

He informed that the Indian food processing sector is 32 per cent of India’s food market. He added that with 3.4 per cent GDP growth rate, the agriculture sector has contributed hugely to India’s economic growth even during COVID times.

24. 16 NH projects in Andhra Pradesh inaugurated

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, on 16 October 2020, inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 16 National Highways projects in Andhra Pradesh.

The total length of the road is one thousand 411 kilometre. The Minister informed that 5000 km of National Highways are being developed as a part of Bharatmala Pariyojana in the State.

25. Centre deputes high-level teams in five states

The Centre has deputed high-level teams to Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal in view of surge in the number of new COVID cases in these state in the recent days.

Each team comprises of a Joint Secretary, one public health expert and one clinician. The teams will support the state efforts towards strengthening containment, surveillance, testing, and prevention.

26. Shoppers Stop names Venu Nair as MD & CEO

Shoppers Stop Ltd. has announced the appointment of Venu Nair as its MD and chief executive officer effective 6 November 2020.

Nair will take over the role from Rajiv Suri who resigned in August 2020, nearly two years after he was appointed.

Nair joins the company from Trent Limited where he was appointed chief executive officer of its popular retail chain Westside earlier in 2020.

27. IDBI launches banking services on WhatsApp

IDBI Bank has introduced banking services on WhatsApp for its customers. This launch is a part of sustained initiatives the Bank has taken to enable the customers to access banking services remotely at their convenience.

WhatsApp Banking service will be offered through a dedicated WhatsApp verified number ensuring end to end encryption.

28. Suzlon Group: Ashwani Kumar group CEO

Suzlon Energy has appointed Ashwani Kumar as its group CEO. Ashwani Kumar has over three decades of experience in projects, business development and finance at leading Indian power and infrastructure companies.

29. Shoppers Stop names Venu Nair as MD & CEO

Shoppers Stop Ltd. has announced the appointment of Venu Nair as its MD and chief executive officer effective 6 November 2020.

Nair will take over the role from Rajiv Suri who resigned in August 2020, nearly two years after he was appointed.

Nair joins the company from Trent Limited where he was appointed chief executive officer of its popular retail chain Westside earlier in 2020.

30. ‘KAPILA’ Kalam Program launched

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ virtually launched the ‘KAPILA’ Kalam Program for Intellectual Property Literacy and Awareness campaign.

He launched this on the 89th birth anniversary of former President and Scientist Late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

The Institution Innovation Council annual report was also presented on the occasion and the launch of IIC 3.0 was announced.

31. Indian Bank inks MoU with Housing Ministry

Indian Bank has signed an MoU with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI).

It has been signed for payment of subsidy to street vendors under the Centre’s SVANidhi Scheme.

Indian Bank has developed an integrated online system to make payments of interest subvention and cash incentives to all street vendor-beneficiaries.

32. NFL distributes Cotton Plucking Machines

National Fertilizers Limited distributed 95 cotton plucking machines free of cost to the farmers under its Corporate Social Responsibility.

The Cotton Plucking machines were
distributed on 15th October 2020 in two separate programmes in Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sadalpur, Hisar and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bhiwani.

33. Odisha to sponsor national rugby teams

Odisha Government would sponsor the Indian national rugby team for the next three years and facilitate high-performance training and conditioning of the players.

An agreement with Indian Rugby Football Union (IRFU) was inked at Kalinga Stadium regarding the same.

The sponsorship will cover training, conditioning and incentivising the Indian national rugby teams (men and women).

34. 33 per cent reservation for women: Punjab

In a major step towards further empowerment of women, the Punjab govt has announced 33% reservation for women in govt jobs.

The reservation benefit will be for direct recruitment to the Punjab Civil Services,

The Punjab Civil Services (Reservation of Posts for Women) Rules, 2020, has been approved to provide such reservation as well as recruitment to boards in group A, B, C and D posts.

35. Michael Irani appointed as IWF President

International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has appointed Dr Michael Irani as IWF Interim President.

Irani is Chairman of the IWF Medical Committee and a former Chairman of the IWF Anti-Doping Commission.

Irani has extensive experience in the fight against doping and in safeguarding athlete welfare. Irani and the IWF Board committed to achieving further progress in constitutional reforms.
