1. Rafael Nadal wins his 13th French Open

In Tennis, Rafael Nadal beat Novak Djokovic 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 to win his 13th French Open, on 11 October 2020.

World number two Nadal claimed his 100th match win at Roland Garros against just two defeats since his 2005 debut.

In Women’s doubles, Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic retained their French Open title. In Women’s Singles, Iga Swiatek won the French Open beating American Sofia Kenin.

2. 44 Bridges built by BRO

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh dedicated 44 Bridges made by Border Roads Organisation across 7 States and Union Territories to the nation through video conferencing on 12 Oct 2020.

These bridges are built in border areas of Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and J&K.

The foundation Stone for Nechiphu Tunnel on the road to Tawang was also laid.

3. PM Modi released Rs 100 commemorative coin

PM Narendra Modi released a commemorative coin of Rs 100 in honour of Vijaya Raje Scindia on 12 Oct 2020.

One of the founder members of BJP, Vijaya Raje Scindia is popularly known as the Rajmata of Gwalior.

The coin is being released in celebration of birth centenary of Vijaya Raje Scindia.

The special commemorative coin was minted by the Finance Ministry as a part of these celebrations.

4. 8 beaches get Blueflag Certification

All 8 beaches recommended by the Government have got the coveted International Blueflag Certification.

No Blueflag nation has ever been awarded for 8 beaches in a single attempt.

The beaches are Shivrajpur beach in Dwarka, Ghoghla beach in Diu, Kasarkod and Padubidri in Karnataka, Kappad in Kerala, Rushikonda in Andhra Pradesh, Golden Beach in Odisha and Radhanagar beach in A&N Islands,

5. ISRO to open its facilities for private sector

ISRO is all set to open its facilities for the private sector.

Future projects for planetary exploration and outer space travel will be open for the private sector.

With the creation of Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre, there will be a mechanism in place and the private sector will be allowed to use ISRO’s facilities and other assets to improve their capacities.

6. 322 projects of 12,413 km awarded under BP

A total of 322 projects in a length of 12,413 Kilometers have been awarded under Bharatmala Pariyojana till August 2020.

The Road Transport and Highways Ministry said around 3,000 km has been constructed under the Project.

Bharatmala Pariyojana is an umbrella program for the highways sector that focuses on optimizing the efficiency of freight and passenger movement across the country.

7. Chaitanya becomes British High Commissioner

Chaitanya Venkateswaran from New Delhi had the unique opportunity to spend one day as the UK’s High Commissioner in India.

The British High Commission has been organising the ‘High Commissioner for a Day’ competition annually since 2017, inviting young Indian women aged 18 to 23 years to take over as their most senior diplomat.

8. International Girl Child Day: 11 October

International Girl Child Day or International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated every year on October 11.

The aim is to empower women, providing more opportunity for girls, and increasing the awareness of gender inequality faced by girls.

The theme for 2020 is – ‘My voice, our equal future!

Every year, 12 million girls are pressed into marriage before they turn 18, according to UNICEF.

9. IN Ships Sahyadri, Kora adjudged as Best Fleet Award Function

2020 was organised to mark the successful culmination of the Operational Cycle of the Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy, on 10 Oct 2020.

The most coveted trophies of Best Ship were awarded to INS Sahyadri amongst Capital ships and INS Kora amongst Corvettes and similar classes of ships.

Indian Naval Ships Airavat and Kiltan jointly bagged the ‘Best Spirited Ship.

10. Five Judo players to participate in Grand Slam

Five players from the Indian Judo Team will be participating in the Grand Slam 2020 competition.

It is an International Judo Federation event happening in Budapest, Hungary from 23-26 Oct 2020.
The five judokas consist of two women and three men players.

The women’s team includes 25-year-old Sushila Devi 48 kg from Manipur and 22-year-old Tulika Mann 78 kg of Delhi.

11. Nihal: Winner in Chess.com’s 2020 C’ship

In Chess, Young Indian player Nihal Sarin emerged winner in the Chess.com’s 2020 Junior Speed Online Championship in Chennai.

He beat Russia’s world junior No. 6 Alexey Sarana 18-7 in the final.

The title win earned Sarin 8,766 US Dollars and enabled him to qualify for the 2020 Speed Chess Championship Final which will feature the world’s best players.

12. Unique initiative in Nashik

In Maharashtra, the ex-servicemen from Malegaon in Nashik district have started a unique initiative to fight Coronavirus and maintain good health.

The initiative to impart health lessons through group exercises on patriotic songs started from 11 Oct 2020.

It started in the presence of Maharashtra State Agriculture Minister Dada Bhuse.

13. Sports infrastructure worth Rs. 49.78 crore

In J&K, Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha inaugurated sports infrastructure worth Rs. 49.78 crore on 11 Oct 2020.

He also laid the foundation of various projects costing Rs. 10.5 Crore across the Union Territory.

He further informed that PM Narendra Modi has sanctioned Rs. 200 crores under the PM’s Development Package for up-gradation of sports infrastructure.

14. “Buyer-Seller Meet” in Srinagar

In Jammu and Kashmir, Principal Secretary Horticulture and Agriculture departments, Navin Kumar Choudhary inaugurated “Buyer-Seller
Meet” in Srinagar on 11 Oct 2020.

It was organised by Department of Horticulture Kashmir in collaboration with Storage Owners Association Kashmir and Fruit & Vegetable Processing Association Kashmir.

It was held to popularize the consumption of local fruits.

15. Madhya Pradesh to invite investors

The Forest Dept of MP will invite private
investors to work on the establishment of forest-based domestic industries and plantations in more than 37 lakh hectares of degraded forest area.

This is being done to reduce the country’s dependence on imported forest produce under the Indo-Self-Reliant India Campaign. Currently, the country is importing more than 35,000 of forest produce.

16. GST Council meeting on 12 October

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the 43rd GST Council meeting through video conferencing in New Delhi on 12 Oct 2020.

The decision on the mode of payment of pending GST compensation share of the states was discussed in the meeting.

The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur and Finance Ministers of States and Union Territories.

The objective of the day is to create awareness among the people about rheumatic disorders as well as to sensitise government and policymakers about the disease.

18. Sunil Abraham: Public Policy Director FB

Facebook has announced the appointment of Sunil Abraham as the director-public policy for data and emerging tech.

He will lead the company’s stance on tech policy issues in India.

He joins Facebook from ArtEZ University for the Arts in the Netherlands where he spent a year as an endowed professor.

He has a vast experience in the field of technology policy.

19. Railways to upgrade sleeper coaches

The Indian Railways has decided to upgrade the non-air-conditioned (AC) sleeper coaches to AC ones for high-speed trains.

Aiming at saving travel time, it is already upgrading the tracks on Golden Quadrilateral and Diagonals, connecting the 4 metro cities, to cater to trains running at a speed of 130 km-160 km/hour.

Meanwhile, non-AC coaches will continue to be in trains running at 110 km/h.

20. Hamilton equals Schumacher’s F1 record

Lewis Hamilton equalled Michael Schumacher’s all-time record 91 Formula One wins on 11 Oct 2020 with an Eifel Grand Prix victory.

This was his seventh win of the season.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished second and took a bonus point for fastest lap, while Australian Daniel Ricciardo finished third.

21. DU’s first fully online admission process

The Delhi University has begun its first fully online admission process for undergraduate courses.

The admission process is completely being
held online and the university has advised students not to visit colleges in person.

The university had announced its first cut-off list on 10 Oct 2020 with Lady Shri Ram College pegging the cut-offs for three honours courses at 100 per cent.

22. Delhi’s Connaught Place to get a smog tower

The Delhi Cabinet has approved a proposal to install a smog tower in Connaught Place to deal with air pollution.

The government has stationed Rs 20 crore, and the tower will come up in 10 months.

It will be the first of its kind in the world. Smog towers are structures designed to work as large-scale air purifiers.

They are usually fitted with multiple layers of air filters.

23. New perennial woody herb species found

A team of researchers have reported a new species of the perennial woody herb of the genus Lepidagathis from the northern laterite plateaus of Kasaragod district in Kerala.

Since this rare plant was spotted in the
neighbourhood of the Ananthapura lake temple, it has been named ‘Lepidagathis ananthapuram ensis’ after the famous temple dedicated to Anantha Padmanabha.

24. GBS Sidhu’s new book to be released

A former intelligence officer with the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), GBS Sidhu has written a book.

The upcoming book ‘The Khalistan . Conspiracy, is a first-person account that brings out little-known facts about the Khalistan movement and the role of senior politicians of the time in creating and sustaining it.

The book published by HarperCollins will be released on October 24, 2020.

25. Goa Government ties up with India Post

The Goa Government has tied up with India Post to get 11,000 farmers enrolled in the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sanman Nidhi scheme.

Postmen will go to the homes of these farmers with enrollment forms.

This is the first such exercise in India to enrol farmers in the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, whereby the postman will be utilised to benefit farmers.
