1. India: 2nd largest manufacturer of PPE kits

Union Minister for Textile and Women and Child Development Smriti Irani has informed that India has become the second-largest manufacturer of PPE kits and suits in the world in record three months’ time during the coronavirus induced lockdown in March 2020. She was speaking after inaugurating – Surat International Textile Expo -SITEX at Surat.

2. ‘Know Your Constitution’ campaign

The Centre government would soon hold a campaign ‘Know your Constitution’ in schools, colleges, and universities across the country. This was announced by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at an event organized by the Uttarakhand Panchayati Raj Department on the subject, Panchayati Raj System – Empowering Decentralised Democracy, in Dehradun.

3. ‘Modi India Calling-2021’ book released

A coffee table book filled with hundreds of photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from his “107 overseas and bilateral visits” was released on 8 Jan 2021. The book, titled “Modi India Calling – 2021”, is the brainchild of senior BJP leader Vijay Jolly. It was released by Delhi BJP President Adesh Gupta at the Press Club of India.

4. Bindu Sagar Cleaning Project launched

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched Bindu Sagar Cleaning Project in Bhubaneswar on 9 Jan 2021. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) will spend Rs. 70 lakh for the revival and cleaning of the lake. Indian Oil Corporation, Institute of Chemical Technology, Bhubaneswar in collaboration with Odisha Bridge Construction Company will jointly carry out the Project.

5. IIT Jammu’s first convocation ceremony

IIT Jammu organized its first-ever convocation ceremony in hybrid mode on January 9, 2021. A total of 79 students were conferred with B.Tech degrees in the Depts of Computer Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. Taijaswaini Agarwal was awarded the President of India Gold Medal for excellent academic performance by scoring the highest CGPA.

6. TESOL Core Certificate Program launched

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has launched the TESOL Core Certificate Program for English teachers of Delhi government schools. The program will enhance the English language teaching competency of the participant teachers which will improve English teaching in government school classrooms. The current batch has 50 teachers.

7. Products of CVRDE handed over to users

The Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) of DRDO, Chennai dedicated Indigenous Retractable Landing Gear Systems for TAPAS UAV, SWIFT UAV to the nation. In addition to this, 18 types of state-of-the-art indigenously developed hydraulic, lubrication and fuel filters for P75 Submarine for Indian Navy, duly qualified by DGQA (N) were handed over to Indian Navy.

8. Turlapati Kutumba Rao passes away

Veteran journalist Turlapati Kutumba Rao passed away in January 2021. Turlapati was the first Telugu journalist to be nominated for the prestigious Padma Shri award. He was awarded the Padma Shri in the year 2002. He has worked with 18 CMs, starting with Andhra Pradesh’s first Chief Minister Tanguturi Prakasam to Nara Chandrababu Naidu.

9. Innovative wall paint to be launched

Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways & MSME Nitin Gadkari will launch an innovative new paint developed by Khadi and Village Industries Commission on 12 Jan 21. The eco-friendly paint, called ‘Khadi Prakritik Paint’ is a first-of-its-kind product, with anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties. Based on cow dung as its main ingredient, the paint is cost-effective and odorless.

10. LIDAR(Aerial Ground) survey starts

The LIDAR (Aerial Ground) survey for Delhi-Varanasi High-Speed Rail Corridor started on 10 Jan 2021 from Greater Noida. A helicopter fitted with state of art Aerial LÄ°DAR and imagery sensors took the first flight and captured the data related to the ground survey. The proposed plan for DVHSR corridor will connect Delhi with major cities like Agra, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Ayodhya, etc.

11. IFFI announces its line-up for OTT platform

51st International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has announced a line-up of programs that will be showcased on the Over-the-top (OTT) platform. The festival will be held in Goa from 16th to 24th January 2021. Bangladesh will be this edition’s Country in Focus. The Country in Focus is a special segment that recognizes the cinematic excellence and contributions of the country.

12. COVID-19 vaccination drive on Jan 16 in J&K

In J&K, Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha will kick off the COVID-19 vaccination drive on January 16, 2021, from Government Medical College, Jammu. 2700 people across the UT will receive the vaccination on day 1 at 27 designated sites which will be subsequently raised to over 1000. The UT has so far registered 1.07 lakh, health workers, for vaccination in the first phase.

13. Delhi government finalises 89 hospitals

Delhi government has finalized 89 hospitals for the first phase of Covid vaccination. Out of these 89 hospitals, 40 hospitals are of the government and 49 are private hospitals. The vaccines will start arriving between 12th January to 14th January 2021. Delhi has 2,25,000 healthcare workers who will get the vaccination,

14. “Period Room” set up for women in Maharashtra

A ‘period room’ has been set up at a public toilet in Maharashtra’s Thane city. It aims to facilitate menstrual hygiene among women dwelling in slums. It has been set up by the Thane Municipal Corporation in collaboration with an NGO, at a slum in Shanti Nagar locality of Wagle Estate area in Thane. It is claimed to be the first-of-its-kind initiative.

15. SPO from Ladakh wins 4th position in Marathon

Jigmet Dolma from India secured the fourth position in the Dhaka Marathon 2021 organized on 10 Jan 2021. The marathon was organized to commemorate the return of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from Pakistan jail to Bangladesh in 1972. Hicham Lakohi of Morocco came 1st in the men’s category while Angela Jim Asunde from Kenya won the women’s category in the same event.

16. National Youth Festival from January 12

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is organizing a week-long National Youth Festival in the country commencing on 12 January 2021. Every year, the festival is held to commemorate the birth anniversary of youth icon Swami Vivekananda. The event will have competitive and non-competitive cultural events, martial arts, exhibitions, intellectual discourses, etc.

17. Indian Railways achieves a landmark

Indian Railways authorities have increased the maximum speed to 130 km per hour for operating trains on the 1,280 km long route out of the total 1,612 km long Golden Quadrilateral – Golden Diagonal route (GQ-GD). The route covers the entire GQ-GD route over the South Central Railway zone, except the Vijayawada – Duvvada section, where a signaling up-gradation task is in progress.

18. Rules for renewal of Int. driving license

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification to facilitate the issuance of International Driving Permit (IDP) for Indian citizens whose IDP has expired while they are abroad. There was no mechanism for its renewal while citizens were abroad and their IDP expired. The driving permit will be couriered to the citizen at his or her address abroad by the respective RTOs.

19. ‘Single Window Clearance System’ launched

Home Minister Amit Shah launched the ‘Single Window Clearance System’, on January 11, 2021. It an online platform to obtain clearances for smooth operationalization of coal mines. This virtual ceremony was held in the presence of Union Minister of Coal Pralhad Joshi, as informed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

20. 11-17 January: Road Safety Week

Road Safety Week is observed from January 11th to January 17th every year. It aims at making the roads and streets in India safer. Road Safety Week is a campaign initiated by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. This year, we are celebrating 32nd Road Safety Week and its theme is “safe yourself to save your family”.

21. UP govt planning to introduce new tenancy law

Uttar Pradesh govt is planning to introduce new laws regarding the tenancy. Once the proposed laws are introduced, the disputes between landlords and tenants will end to a large extent, and it would be easily ascertained how many people are giving houses on rent in the state. The Housing Department has issued a draft of the Uttar Pradesh Urban Complexes Renting Regulations Ordinance-2020.

22. LIC rolls out ‘Special Revival Campaign

LIC has launched a Special Revival Campaign starting from Jan 7 till March 6 for its customers to revive their lapsed individual policies subject to certain conditions. Under this Campaign, policies of specific eligible plans can be revived within 5 years from the date of the 1st unpaid premium subject to terms and conditions. Policyholders will get 20 per cent late fee concession.

23. BMC to set up 5 air quality monitor stations

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will set up continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations (CAAQMS) at 5 sites in Mumbai. The stations will have display boards showing air quality index with its impact and weather information for 24 hours. These stations will record levels of PM2.5 and PM10, sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons carbon monoxide, ozone, and ammonia.

24. Five year old Presha Khemani sets world record

5-year-old Presha Khemani from Pune has set a world record by naming 150 countries along with their capitals and identifying the flags in just 4 minutes and 17 seconds. She won the ‘Youngest Kid to Identify Flags and Country Names’ title for her incredible feat in the World Records India Book. She was declared the record holder and awarded a gold medal on October 17, 2020.

25. Kerala govt to set up Kalaripayattu Academy

Kerala government is setting up a Kalaripayattu (Kalari) Academy at Vellar Craft Village, under the Department of Tourism. 3,500 square feet gallery is expected to be completed by March 2021, where Kalari Asans (gurus) led by Padma Shri Meenakshiamma will conduct classes. CM Pinarayi Vijayan is scheduled to release the syllabus of Kalaripayattu Academy on 16 January 2021.

26. Govt pays Rs 1,364 cr under PM-KISAN

The government has paid Rs. 1,364 crore to 20.48 lakh undeserving beneficiaries under its ambitious PM-KISAN scheme till July 31, 2020. The data was released by the Union Agriculture Ministry in Jan 2021. Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sammann Nidhi (PM-KISAN) was launched by the Centre in 2019. Under the scheme, income support of Rs. 6,000 per year in three equal instalments are paid to small farmers.

27. CCI approves MHEPL 100% acquisition of CAHPL

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on January 8, 2021, approved the acquisition of 100% shareholding of the Columbia Asia Hospitals (CAHPL) by Manipal Health Enterprises Private Limited (MHEPL). MHEPL, which is a part of Manipal Educational and Medical Group, operates a network of hospitals, providing multi-speciality care. CAHPL began its operations in India in 2005.

28. Starlink broadband gets approval in UK

Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite broadband system received licensing approval for its user terminals from the UK’s communications regulator in Jan 2021. Greece, Germany, and Australia have also approved the new system. Starlink has already launched hundreds of the satellites and started testing a beta service in North America.

29. DRDO develops Him-Taapak for Indian army

DRDO has developed multiple products such the Him-Taapak heating devices (Bukhari) and snow melters to help keep the soldiers warm in the extremely low temperatures. DRDO has also developed ‘Alocal cream’ that helps in preventing frostbite chilblains and other cold injuries. The Indian Army has placed orders worth Rs. 420 crores for these appliances.
